August, 2021 Newsletter

Happy August!

The beginning of August is a wake-up call, isn't it? All those projects we meant to complete, all those books we were going to read . . . August arrives and suddenly it feels like time is running out for all those lazy, hazy days of summer plans we had.

I haven't had as many reading sessions in the hammock as I would like this summer, so I'm going to actually schedule some. I hope wherever you are and whatever you're doing, you get some of what makes summer summer for you.

I've continued to hear from readers who enjoyed A Distant Grave. Thank you! Reviews, word-of-mouth recommendations, and kind emails mean so much. I got to do my first in-person event a couple of weeks ago and it reminded me how much I miss being in the same room with my readers. Emails are a wonderful substitute though and I am so appreciative for everyone who has picked up one of my books.

In the newsletter this month, I'll show you my summer reading pile. You'll also find a recipe that uses one of my favorite high summer fruits: plums.

I hope you and yours are well and safe and that wherever you are, you're able to make the most of the rest of August!

I have been on book deadline for most of the summer (Maggie #3 is coming in 2022 and I'll have some details to share in September!) but many of my favorite writers have new books out, so my TBR pile has grown and grown . . . I'm looking forward to finally making a dent in it! What are you reading this summer?

Many years ago, I was visiting some friends in France. When it was time for dessert, they put a beautiful bowl of plum compote from the previous summer's harvest on the table. It was rich and jammy, a taste of summer in the middle of February, and I loved it. This cake is now one of my favorite summer recipes and the cooked plums always make me think of France. Try it!
