Session 2: City of Neighborhoods, Philadelphia 1890-1910 with author Joseph Minardi, editor of UCHS Newsletter On the West Side

Join the University City Historical Society for a series of book talks and recent works by UCHS members and neighbors.

For our second book talk, Mr. Minardi will discuss his recently published book, City of Neighborhoods, Philadelphia 1890-1910 (Schiffer Publishing, 2020).  His talk will discuss his vintage photos and the transformation of Philadelphia into a city of neighborhoods at the turn of the 20th century.  Then, Philadelphia was the “workshop of the world,” and there was growing demand for worker housing.  This resulted in a "golden age of construction" and the development of entire new neighborhoods where immigrants could find work, homes and community.   Arranged by neighborhood, this Philadelphia family album, a scrapbook for the city, is filled with rare vintage photographs and comprehensive information about the houses, the builders, the neighborhoods, and the people who lived in them.

Joseph Minardi is an award-winning local photographer and a recipient of the 2007 Preservation Initiative Award from UCHS and the 2014 Annual Award for Service to the Preservation Community from Save Our Sites. He is a former vice president of UCHS and editor of its bimonthly newsletter, On the West Side, and writer of “History Matters” for the East Falls Local.  This is his fourth book about Philadelphia.
