A resource for students and teachers, a quote to inspire, and a question to ponder. It really is the little things we do consistently that lead to great outcomes. |

According to CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), "social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions". You can use the CASEL Wheel below to better understand what SEL looks like in practice. The five broad, interrelated areas of competence are: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Click here to visit the interactive CASEL Wheel for examples of each competency. |

SEL & Workforce Readiness |
The topic of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in adult education contexts has come up quite a bit in the professional development courses I lead through Florida IPDAE. It is important to remember that SEL is not only relevant but often foremost when engaging in learning and work. If our minds are overly stressed and distracted by too many thoughts, how can we effectively focus, learn, and grow? If we cannot empathize, how can we effectively collaborate and build relationships? If we cannot love and lead ourselves, how can we love and lead others? The following video "SEL & Workforce Readiness" beautifully illustrates how developing social-emotional skills are key to making life and career dreams become a reality. |
