TENNIS TRIVIA The shortest Grand Slam final in the history of tennis goes to 22-time winner Steffi Graf who took the title at Roland Garros in 1988 over Natasha Zvereva with a final score of 6-0, 6-0. The "double-bagel" lasted just 32 minutes. Zvereva managed to win just 13 points in the whole match. |

MEMBER PROFILE ALEC WHYTE Karen and I arrived in Perth from New Zealand in February 1981. At that time I counted 13 construction cranes along St Georges/Adelaide Terrace which was pretty exciting for a young architect to see! I was introduced to Hensman Park Tennis Club by a work college who accompanied me to social tennis one weekend. Whilst at university I was involved in rowing and only took up tennis after graduating and moving from Auckland to Napier for work in my late 20s. That may explain my lack of tennis skills, instincts and anticipation. I spent 3 years as the HPTC Board President, during which time the three bays of grass courts we progressively removed and replaced. Not a particularly popular move at the time, but long term has been fantastic for social members as grass courts are now available all year round. In 1984 Parry and Whyte Architects was established and it now takes up a lot of my time and energy. I have been involved in projects from Kununurra to Esperance and many, many places in between including helping design the new Hensman Clubhouse. Outside tennis my interests revolve around my family, a son, daughter and grandson. I like listening to music (mostly in private as my tastes are not shared by Karen or my children!). I like reading and fine art having studied Art History at university, as well as the occasional overseas trips testing Karen’s patience by squeezing in visits to architectural interests. I completed a four day trek along the Inca Trail in Peru ending up at Machu Picchu in 2017 and visited Frank Lloyd Wright’s buildings in and around San Fransico and Scottsdale Arizona as well as Le Corbusiers Buildings around Paris. The Hensman Park Tennis Club has always been wonderfully kind to me, and I hope I will be able to enjoy the tennis, fun, friendship and comradery for many years to come! |
