MARCH 2024 NEWSLETTER

Hello Morton Meadows Neighbors,

As I reflect on these past months, I am feeling joy and sorrow. My flowers and toddlers are loving the rain but our basement is not. I love this location but I am also pained by the theft that continually takes place here. I am thankful for present neighbors that are willing to sit with me in the sad and celebrate the good- we have so much to be thankful for in Morton Meadows.

Thank you to those who participated in our Mother's Day Tea, Spring Community Clean Up, and Neighborhood Garage Sale! We have heard great feedback from these events and plan to do them next year.

I am looking forward to seeing you at the 4th of July celebrations and then our next meeting on July 23rd at 7PM. We will try to have it in the Morton Meadows Community Garden (next to Taco Johns). If it is too hot, we'll meet at the Mizpah Lodge. We invited UNMC to share more updates. We will discuss the biggest event of the year, the Boulevard Jam. Brian Meints will share how our neighborhood is going through the steps to becoming a Historical District. This is a perfect time to get involved, we have a couple board positions open!

Happy Birthday America,

Danielle Petro

MMNA President

The growing season is in full swing at the garden! We feel really lucky we have not had any damage from the recent storms!

Now is the time to check your squash vine stems for the small orange eggs of the squash vine borer, also check the underside of the leaves for light blue to green eggs of the brown marmorated stink bug. Just squish them with a gloved hand when you find them!

Watering tomatoes consistently when the weather gets dry and mulching helps ward off diseases. Make sure you water at the base, overhead watering can promote mildew and blight. We will be celebrating our 8th year at the garden on August 31 at 6:30pm, stop by for some treats and beverages and see what's growing!

If weather permits on July 23rd the neighborhood association meeting will be held at the garden it is located on Saddle Creek and Pierce behind the carwash.

Stop by our Extension Master Gardener table at the Boulevard Jam on Sept 15th for info on the garden and pollinating plants.

Holiday Committee

Come out and meet your neighbors at National Night Out on August 6th at 6:30-8:38 on Twin Ridge Boulevard between Pine and Hickory. There will be snacks, beverages and fun and games for the kids. Hoping for OPD and OFD to make an appearance this year.

Don't forget about the Boulevard Jam on Sept 15th!

We will be at the boulevard and Woolworth for Halloween again this year.

The holiday committee is looking for members! It's not a big commitment a little shopping, planning and it's fun!
