Summer 2024

A New Release, Summer Reads & More!

Seven schools, three bookstores, and more than 1,000 miles in six days! As part of the kickoff celebration for the second EXPLORER ACADEMY series, I hit the road in April on a BOOK TOUR. I had a great time meeting readers and introducing the new series (by the way, you don't need to have read Series One to dive into this spinoff).

A huge thanks to the schools and bookstores who supported me: Brick & Mortar Books in Redmond, WA, Auntie's Bookstore in Spokane, WA and Second Star to the Right Books in Denver, CO (the stunning mural in the photo below is painted on the side of the store). If you'd like a signed copy of THE SAILOR CIPHER, please call, order online, or drop by one of the above stores and thanks for supporting our indies!

Along with the book tour, we also put together a BLOG TOUR. These posts are among my favorite things to do because it's a chance to share bonus goodies you won't find anywhere else, like a deleted scene or a character interview! Scroll down for all the BLOG TOUR topics and links.

Finally, if you live in the Puget Sound area, mark your calendar for Saturday, September 7th and join me, along with a few dozen other authors, for the Bookfest Kids' Book Festival. This is such a fun event! Keep an eye on their website for a schedule to come soon.

Have a great summer, everyone, and dare to explore!

Your friend in books,

Trudi

Hop in and let's head out on the THE SAILOR CIPHER BLOG TOUR for the inside scoop on the new series. Here we go ...

  • First stop is this DELETED SCENE from THE SAILOR CIPHER at the Pragmatic Mom.

  • Our next destination is Good Reads with Ronna for a BOOK EXCERPT.

  • You'll definitely want to catch my exclusive INTERVIEW WITH SAILOR, the main character in the new series, at Reading Middle Grade.

  • Time to get personal! Learn how I discovered and followed MY PASSION (and how you can, too) at YA Book Central.

  • Finally, get to know Khadijah Khatib, the talented artist who brings the explorers to life on the page, at Imagination Soup.

I hope you had a great ride. Thanks for coming along and a big shout out to all of the wonderful bloggers who hosted me!

What are You Reading this Summer?

Look for THE SAILOR CIPHER in the spring and summer issues of your favorite magazines! Take the quiz in Girls' World to discover your explorer-themed name and get in on the giveaway fun at the Beach Blanket Book Club in the June/July issue of Girls' Life.

If you're looking for some great reads (and who isn't?) check out Imagination Soup's Summer Reading List of Best Books for Kids. The lists cover pre-k to 8th grade so there's something for everyone!

What am I reading? Here are some of my new favorites!

Creative Corner - A Fun Activity

On a recent visit with Ms. Kunert's fourth graders at Emerald Elementary in Vancouver, WA, the students showed me their 'One Pager, an exercise the class often does with a book they're reading (in this case, THE NEBULA SECRET). They'll pose questions, consider motives, do brief character profiles, and even toss out ideas about where the story could be going!

"We use these to capture our thinking during reading," explained Ms. Kunert. What a great way to engage readers. And I love the inclusion of artwork! Whenever I begin a book, I like to do sketches of my characters. I keep the drawings nearby for inspiration as I write.

Log on to the official EXPLORER ACADEMY website for more activities, games, book excerpts, and reader/teacher guides!
