Another BE…Business Empowerment |
Let’s just keep this BE theme going! Business empowerment starts and ends with human empowerment. As entrepreneurs and business leaders, it is imperative that one intentionally creates an organizational culture that allows their team members, customers, strategic partners, and community members to BE themselves – authentically and unapologetically – so they can bring that same passion to the business. For example, the Ritz-Carlton, a 5-star luxury hospitality company, is known for their culture of customer service. |
This is founded on their service values that are embodied by their team members, one of which states: “I am empowered to create unique, memorable, and personal experiences for our guests.” While the Ritz-Carlton focuses on their guests, are you doing the same for your customers? Are you empowering your team members to do the same? Are your strategic partners having a uniquely created, positively memorable, personalized experience with you and your business? Further, the Ritz Carlton culture is built on “an unshakeable credo and corporate philosophy of unwavering commitment to service, both in our hotels and in our communities” (Ritz-Carlton, 2023). For other businesses, this begins on the organizational level with a clear vision, purpose, and articulated values, which then permeates every aspect of one’s business from curating the team and developing policies & procedures through to the systems that support the customer’s experience with high-quality service and/or quality products. Why bother? What are some of the benefits of creating a healthy work environment that empowers others? According to a Harvard Business Review (2015) article, here is “Proof that Positive Work Cultures are more Productive:” Reduced work stress: In the U.S. an estimated 550 million workdays are lost annually due to stress on the job. Improve the work culture and reduce the stress, which in turn minimizes turnover, absenteeism, and lost workdays. Higher employee engagement: In a study by Gallup, organizations with employees that are disengaged experience 18% lower productivity and 16% lower profitability. Yikes! Organizations with higher employee engagement experience about 17% more productivity and 21% more profitability than their counterparts. Increased loyalty: With the Great Resignation, employees are not staying in environments that are no longer conducive to their values and well-being, which increases voluntary turnover. Therefore, business leaders must encourage open communication, honest feedback, and teamwork as ways of creating a positive work environment and empowering key stakeholders.
As entrepreneurs, we cannot be and do all things for all people. Therefore, the process of becoming stronger and more confident in business, which builds capacity and allows it to grow, requires human involvement and creating a culture of empowerment to fulfill the business’ purpose. Thus, business empowerment begins and ends with human empowerment. Do a pulse check…how is your business empowerment? |
