Dear Dear Neighbor,

Wow!  More than 100 donors have contributed towards installing a sargassum barrier outside the reef in Half Moon Bay, including 36 neighbors and local business from outside the High Impact Zone.  Gracias a su generosidad, the barrier campaign has now raised nearly $400,000.  In other words, we’ve raised over 80% of a budget that includes $375,000 for actually installing the barrier and another $100,000 for environmental protection.

Although we’ve already raised more than enough to cover the cost of the barrier itself,  we will not deviate from the Sustainable Financing model that requires us to raise additional funds for monitoring and mitigating any unexpected environmental impact the barrier might have.  We remain committed to:

  • ensuring safe egress of turtle hatchlings from the bay

  • disposing of any excess sargassum that might unexpectedly accumulate on the southern headlands outside the barrier

  • promptly resolving any other unforeseen environmental issue that might arise.

Our success to date has encouraged us to extend our fund-raising efforts beyond the self-imposed fundraising deadline of August 15th.  We set that date in a world beset by supply chain issues and shipping delays to ensure delivery by March 1, 2023.  But even if the barrier installation date slips a tiny bit, we’re so close to the finish line that we’re confident we can make this project happen.

We’ve still got another $41,000 in pending pledges and have recently heard from some additional local businesses with an interest in sponsorship opportunities.  So, if you’ve already donated in support of this project, thank you again!  Your help has put us on the road to success.

And if you have not yet donated, now is the time to do so!  The sooner we raise our ENTIRE BUDGET, including Contingency Funds, the sooner we can get the barrier installed and begin our $100,000 investment in protecting our local environment. It’s now or never!  Really, it is!!

If you care about protecting our coral reef, restoring our pristine beaches, preventing erosion and, of course, promoting the safety of our nesting turtles and their hatchlings, please make a donation to the Yucatan Environmental Foundation TODAY.  We welcome your contribution in whatever amount seems affordable to you.

Help us Protect our Local Environment TODAY!

Your donation will help us demonstrate that our community is united in protecting the things that make Akumal Norte such a unique and lovely place.

LAST CALL: IT IS NOW OR NEVER!

P.S.  And even if you’ve already donated, we would, of course, welcome a supplemental contribution to assure the success of the project. ❤️🐢❤️🐢
