Why I Joined the

Family Promise Board

Of Hudson County

By: Sister Georgette Gavioli, Family Promise Board Member

Hello! I am Sister Georgette Gavioli, a Sister of St. Joseph of Philadelphia. I have ministered in the Archdiocese of Newark for 40 years with 29 of them being at St. Aloysius' Parish in Jersey City from which I retired in this past June.

What drew me to Family Promise of Hudson County was the fact that families could stay sheltered together and not be separated while being in a tough situation. I began volunteering at our day center in the early mornings when families arrived from their evening of shelter at the local houses of worship. And though we had to change our shelter model from a houses of worship rotational model to a static location model due to Covid-19, I am still in awe of how quickly we were able to adapt and find stable static shelter locations for the families.

My love for this program has grown as I see the families seizing learning opportunities, growing in confidence, and becoming self-sufficient and employed. My time of volunteering during Covid-19 was spent delivering food, and other well needed household items, while also procuring gift cards for groceries and other necessities.

As our congregation’s motto is “ready for any good work” and Family Promise’s motto is “together WE can;” I am ready and delighted that I can be a part of the “WE” in this phenomenal organization.

By being a board member, I have experienced first-hand what Family Promise of Hudson County can accomplish with grants, donations and the service of volunteers.

Our upcoming Fall event, An Evening of Promise: Bridging a Better Future Together, on Thursday October 28th, is a celebratory fundraiser cocktail party honoring our Board Member Sister Georgette Gavioli's 29 years of service at St. Aloysius. The proceeds will fund the general operating cost of our shelter locations. Each tax deductible ticket is priced at $65.75, the cost for one day of keeping our shelters open that temporarily house our homeless families. Our goal is to raise enough funds via tickets, journal advertisements and sponsorships to cover our shelter operating costs for one year.

Would you be willing to help us with our event to help keep our families sheltered?

We are happily accepting volunteers and will find a way to make use of your skills, no matter what they are. Likewise, we are looking for sponsors for our event. If you are interested in giving a larger tax deductible donation, please see the attached link with the official sponsorship information.

If there is one thing Family Promise of Hudson County has learned, it is that together WE can make a difference. We welcome you to join our community and help us brighten the lives of others!

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at a.lopez@familypromisehudsoncounty.org for volunteering opportunities.

Please see the following links for tickets, journal advertisements and sponsorship opportunities.

The due date for sponsorships and journal advertisements is Thursday, September 30th.

Giving Digitized

We want to give a shoutout to a platform that has been incredibly helpful to us, specifically during July. Giving Digitized enabled us to gain much-needed donations for multiple families within our program and we are extremely grateful for all they have done for us!

Please visit their site by clicking the button below and follow the instructions in the picture to the right!

Giving Digitized Website!

Additionally, we would also like to thank all those who donated through Giving Digitized. Your kindness will not be forgotten and it is people like you who will help us change the world for the better. Truly, together We can!

Amazon Donors

During July, we asked for donations for our fire victim family. To say you all delivered via Amazon purchases is an understatement. The amount of packages that came in for the family was a blessing and a glance at just how bright and positively abundant their future will be. The family is beyond grateful to all who donated and so are we!

Together WE can make a difference, however, it all starts with one's generosity. In this case, your generosity.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!
