Community COVID-Safe Interpretive Hikes Move Forward! Board Treasurer Aniko Millan, "AKA" Ranger Kiko, kicked off the season with our first community hike of the year to get an early peek at the wildflowers coming to the glorious hills of Rancho San Vicente County Park! Three households for a total of nine people joined us on Saturday for a walk along the Lisa Killough Trail to the North Ridge Trail making for a wonderful loop. Along the way we seen a few early bloomers such as buttercups and California poppies but we were lucky enough to see soaring turkey vultures, a few hoovering American kestrels and a white-tailed kite. Aniko taught the particpants about serpentine soil, the federally threatened bay checkerspot butterfly, barn owl boxes and one person got to open an owl pellet! We have more community hikes coming up and contingent on County Health Orders perhaps we'll be fortunate enough to invite more members from the public to join us on a hike. All programs are recorded, later edited, and posted to our YouTube page. |

The man behind the designs. Volunteer Marcos Ortiz has used his profound skills as a graphic designer to better the community around him. A skilled muralist (once frowned upon for his accidently run-ins with walls with a spray can in his younger years) he is a role model to our youth. Today, he is hired by business owners and advocates to create and paint beautiful murals on their walls of business; helping to attract customers, spread words of inspiration, as well as providing a visual eye treat to locals and tourists as they walkabout San Jose. Thank you for adding colour to our community Marcos!

South Bay Wildflower Chasers So, you want to see some wildflowers huh? Well, you came to the right place. We teamed up with our buddy Docent Ron Horii from Santa Clara County Parks and Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority. We picked our favorite hot spots in the South Bay using our years of experience of being out on the field. We’re going to highlight four nature destinations that can be great for wildflowers during Spring: Santa Teresa County Park, Calero County Park/Rancho San Vicente, Coyote Lake/Harvey Bear Ranch County Park, and Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve.

Saved By Nature is proud to welcome Luz Maria Marquez as our new intern! Our first ever educational and career development paid intern in an effort to diversify our workforce in parks. " Hi! My name is Luz Maria “Lucy” Marquez and I am a student from SJSU majoring in Environmental Studies. I was born and raised in South San Jose close to a county park. I loved spending time with my family at the park and respect for nature was instilled as a top priority for me at a young age. Having loved volunteering at science camp several times led me to pursue a degree involving nature. I welcome opportunities that allow me to learn and teach others how to appreciate and enjoy nature responsibly to make sure it thrives for everyone and everything. "
