'360' Newsletter

Ramin Yazdanpanah, Ph.D. | August 31, 2023

This easy-to-digest weekly newsletter presents a resource for students and teachers, a quote to inspire, and a question to ponder. It really is the little things we do consistently that lead to great outcomes.

Be SMARTer, growth mindset everywhere, work is love

Happy '360' Thursday! Here are this week's resources, quote, and question.

Student Resource

Be SMARTer

Thinking about what we want to achieve and how we are going to get there is something anybody can and should do. We can be better at this by being SMART:

S for specific. A goal should be linked to one activity, thought, or idea.

M for measurable. A goal should be something you can track and measure progress toward.

A for actionable. There should be clear tasks or actions you can take to make progress toward a goal.

R for realistic. A goal should be possible to achieve.

T for timely. A goal should fall within a specific time period.

Tip for students

After watching the example in the following video, practice writing a SMART goal. Share this SMART goal with your friends, family, or teachers. Be open to revising and updating your SMART goals and remember that setting and achieving goals is a process, not a straight line!

Teacher Resource

Growth Mindset Activities

The article "10 of the Best Growth Mindset Activities for Young Learners" has some excellent activities to cultivate a growth mindest in the classroom, at home, and in everyday life. To access the article, click here.

Tip for teachers

Select one or two of the activities and strategies discussed in the article and apply them with your students, kids, friends, and just as importantly, YOURSELF!

One of my favorites is "Negative to Positive". For example:

“I’m not smart enough to figure this out” …

… can become “I haven’t got this figured out yet, but I will if I just keep trying.”

Question

Applying the SMART approach, what is something you want to accomplish this week, this month, or this year?

Until next week,

Dr. Yaz

P.S. Speaking of goals, have you seen what Messi has been up to in the MLS?!?

P.P.S. Sending love to all those affected by Hurricane Idalia.
