Book Club Fun

Last week I spoke with my first book club about Tequila Midnight. It was loads of fun, and tequila was served. If you're interested in having me speak at your book club - in person or virtually - email me at kathryn@kathryndodson.com.

Don Rico Tequila

I recently found out that someone I went to high school with in El Paso owns a tequila company! Sharon Olivo and her husband Rick started Don Rico Tequila because they wanted to produce and sell delicious high-quality tequila. I couldn't wait to interview her!

How did you get into the business? My husband started the company. I'd been a wine drinker for 30 years. Our tequila is so flavorful I sip it like wine.

What's your favorite thing about the business? I like meeting new people at tastings and other events. After spending my whole career in sales, I've got a product now, tequila, that everyone says yes to.

What do you love about El Paso? The mountain and the people. I can relax in El Paso in a way I can't in other places.

What is special about Don Rico tequila? All of our tequila is additive-free (no added sugar, flavorings, color, or chemicals). Out of the 3,000 brands of tequila, only about 90 are additive-free. Additive-free tequila is pure with the natural sweetness of agave, which is the way tequila should be.

How do you recommend drinking tequila? Neat, without lime or salt. Good tequila can be sipped. My favorite is the blanco (white), which is straight out of the still instead of being aged in barrels. It tastes like true agave instead of picking up the flavor of the barrel.

What do you think about Tequila Midnight? I haven't finished it yet, but I like it so far. I love that Jessica likes tequila. I did want to know what her favorite El Paso pizza restaurant was

(it's Ardovino's).

Don Rico Tequila is available online and at retailers in Texas, New Mexico, and California.

Happy Travels: Parrish Museum, Long Island, New York

Last week I saw an art exhibit at the Parrish Museum on Long Island. The exhibit, James Brooks: A Painting Is a Real Thing, was a complete retrospective of the artist's work, including early sketches from World War II, a reproduction of a mural on display at La Guardia Airport, and later abstract expressionist works. It was truly an inspiration.
