Carvers

Attention all Carvers!

Artistry in Wood is upon us and we need your help.  First be sure to finish your projects in time for entry. I have 3 bowls ready to go and will be working hard to finish a couple other projects.  Second, if you can help with Artistry everyone is welcome.  Set up is at 0900 on Saturday February 18.  Entries will be accepted on Sunday and Monday February 19 and 20.  Many hands will make short work.  And finally this year will be a longer show.  So any volunteers willing to sit and visit with attendees or man the area will be greatly appreciated.  Either show up for a few hours or contact Cindy to get on the schedule.  The show will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to give everyone a break.  Bring a small project to demonstrate.  We will again have a silent auction so if you have a piece to donate to the club those items will be auctioned to help pay for putting on the show.  I hope to see you all there.

In other news remember to pay your membership dues.  You can bring your membership dues to Artistry.

Scrollers

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The first meeting of the new year in Anchorage was off to a slow start. There were only 2 members in attendance. No sawdust was made.

The Valley club had 4 members in attendance. The projects were Valentine themed. Below are the patterns that were presented. The Gnome was the most popular pattern of the day. Members were taught how and when to use a relief cut. We also discussed how to ensure the appropriate depth and direction of the cutting. They learned about how to determine where a pattern should be placed to conserve wood as well as wood grain direction.

There was a lot of discussion about ways to increase attendance and member participation. There were many good ideas. Some of the ideas were seeking out new venues where we could demonstrate the art, assigning tasks to different members for each meeting and changing up the format to include videos and demonstrations. The club would welcome any other suggestions.

Participation in Artistry in Wood was discussed. There was only one member who was interested in demonstrating during the show. The club scroll saw will be provided at Artistry in Wood if anyone would like to help with demonstrations. Please contact Joe Paluba or Dave Vasak to arrange the demonstration times. There is an opportunity for members to make some money from selling their work during the show while demonstrating.  Artistry in Wood will receive a small amount of the sales with the artist retaining the remainder.

The club would like to thank Ray Reynolds for his years of service as the club president. Ray has decided to step down, but plans to remain an active member of the club. At this time Dave Vasak will remain Vice President and Rhonda Hayhurst will remain secretary. If there are any members who would like to be considered for president or any other position, please contact Dave Vasak.

There will be no meeting for the Anchorage club in February or March due to Artistry in Wood. The Valley group will not be meeting in February due to Artistry in Wood. An email will be sent with an invitation for the March valley meeting. Depending on the response, that meeting may be cancelled as well. If you don’t receive an invitation, please contact Rhonda Hayhurst to ensure your name is on the club email list.

Best of luck to all who are entering projects in the Artistry in Wood show.
