The CRD Parks Committee is developing a Regional Parks Strategy Planning process this spring to update the plan by the summer of 2022. This Call to Action is to galvanize public support for ensuring that protection of biodiversity and conservation lies at the heart of this strategy. While population growth in the Capital Region will increase the need for recreation facilities in our regional parks, this expansion must not destroy the life- supporting ecology on which all life depends. We ask you to contact the CRD Board to support giving top priority to nature and biodiversity in preparing the strategic plan. At the end of the day, if nature fails then we all fail. We must do all that we can to preserve the precious biodiversity in our outstanding regional parks system. Click here to find the contact information for the CRD Board |

The Hurricane They Call Lady submitted by Daniel Francis |
I’m a Métis singer/songwriter from Victoria/Vancouver BC. Recently, I’ve been blessed to spend 60 days in my car feeling and learning about homelessness and have now become a humanitarian and advocate for many causes! I recently met a lady in a wheelchair at the Salvation Army in Richmond, BC. I’ve heard many stories from all guests and nationalities. Karen Storm’s story stirred my mind, as did others, but I realized through female friendships over the past year and the connection between my ability to listen, to remember and never forget the stories about the abuse between partners. Karen, who is three years younger than me, suffered tremendously from domestic abuse. I broke down crying listening to Karen’s story. Her inability to speak meant I had to read what she wrote, so together we wrote this song in connection and friendship, inspired by hope and healing. Listen to the song and read more here |

When We Almost Gave Up Until We Caught the Tail of the Rainbow submitted by Raz Salvarita |

The year 2020 was grappled with the global pandemic and we were caught in the midst of it when we moved from one island to another – to settle at my mother’s hometown; a farming community located 35 miles from the capital city of Iloilo on Panay island in the Philippines. Deaths, disruptions, and distractions are traumatic daily realities during this time and we share the sudden sorrows of bad news; we also had our moments of doubts and fear that we almost gave up until we caught the tail of the rainbow – a rainbow of hopefulness; a lifeline within the stream of creative healing expressions – a reminder that it’s all worthwhile to pursue greater imaginations and aspirations in every breath of miracles. And so, we organized a Creative Recovery program for the village women farm folks and also birthed-through a community-based arts vessel that is known as Baryo Balangaw Creative Initiatives: Bridging Artistic Transformations in Rural Communities – which was awarded a small grant from SEA Junction to kickstart the vision. submitted by Jon O'Riordan This PBS video is a powerful testament to the courage and tenacity of determined protestors to protect the old growth forests in the Fairy Creek Watershed and surrounding areas in southwest Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The subtitle, "And the Secrets It Holds" is even more powerful for the film illustrates that forests have more to tell us than we have to tell them about surviving the oncoming climate emergency. The Postcard Climate Show submitted by Gabriela Hirt |
Heatwaves, floods, fires, drought — the warming climate is messing with life as we know it and it is getting harder and harder to not despair. But what can we do? Aiming to find an answer through art, the Gage Gallery is presenting The Postcard Climate Show, an exhibition showcasing the community’s ideas for climate solutions. “We came up with this project because we want to bring hope through art and help release climate-related feelings of angst,” explains Gage artist Ilka Bauer, one of the masterminds behind the project. “Our intention is to bring the community together while encouraging people to talk and think about what can be done.” One does not have to be an artist to draw, write, stitch, paint or collage to answer the question: what change would you like to see in society for a climate-friendly future? Or what steps would you be personally willing to take? Read more here |
