January Newsletter

FROM THE CHAIR...In a few days, light will once again be coming from the Executive Branch of the United States. After the last few days, along with the last four years, it is past due. I could go on and on about the debacle and how we, America, got here. But I am not going to do that today. My editor is waiting and if I started on that issue, it could not end.

Tom Sapp named BCDP ‘Democrat of the Year’

by Arthur Hill

The Brunswick County Democratic Party has established a new “Democrat of the Year” award, which it will present each year to the person who has made an outstanding commitment to the growth of the party in our county.

Informally known as the “Sappy,” the award was — appropriately — presented this year to Tom Sapp, the BCDP chair. Tom’s dedication to the party and its growth in Brunswick County is well documented and appreciated. He has helped reinforce the foundation for success in the coming years, and members of the BCDP are grateful for his service and dedication.

A plaque, which will list the names of each year’s winner, hangs in the BCDP headquarters in Bolivia.

David Rouzer betrays our constitution, again.

By Jeff Zalles

Just as we all expected, Rep. David Rouzer (Rep NC) joined his fellow Republican congressmen to object to the certification of the electoral votes from swing states that gave the presidential election to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Of course, the last-ditch effort of Donald Trump and his GOP toadies to overturn the election failed. But it does show that, despite the futility of the effort, David Rouzer felt it was more important to show his loyalty to the most corrupt president in US history than to abide by the constitution he swore to defend.

We must not forget. David Rouzer must be held accountable for the arson he has committed to our democracy. In case you haven't read the memo he sent to his constituents, it is reprinted here.

Democrats favor Trump impeachment; let your views be known!

By Arthur Hill

Unlike their Republican colleagues, North Carolina Democrats are calling for Trump to leave office before the end of his term on January 20.

Governor Roy Cooper also voiced his support for Trump’s removal from office before Jan. 20.

“This president has betrayed our country and is therefore unfit to lead it," Cooper tweeted. “He should resign or be removed from office.”

Also leading the charge is North Carolina Democratic delegation to Congress. “President Trump invited violent rioters to the U.S. Capitol and encouraged the mob to breach the Capitol building and attempt a coup,” said first-term Rep. Kathy Manning, of Greensboro. “This seditious act comes just days after he was caught on tape soliciting election fraud in the state of Georgia. He must be removed from office immediately.”

Democratic Reps. Alma Adams of Charlotte and David Price of Chapel Hill both said Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet should invoke the 25th amendment of the U.S. Constitution to remove Trump from office.

“President Trump’s erratic behavior, his refusal to honor his constitutional duties, and his incitement of an attack on the very seat of democracy leave us no choice. It is too dangerous to wait until January 20th,” Price said in a statement that also blamed Republicans in Congress for the riot.

Rep. Deborah Ross, a Wake County Democrat, said she supports Trump’s removal from office via resignation, the 25th Amendment or impeachment.

“Our country is no longer safe with President Trump in a position of power and responsibility,” Ross said in a statement. “A president who fails to act in the interest of democracy, the United States, and its people is not fit to lead.”

Ross said she is co-sponsoring articles of impeachment. So, too, is Price, who said Trump’s Georgia call and his “encouragement of violent events” before the riot at the Capitol warrant removal from office.

“What we have seen over the last few weeks rises to the level of impeachable conduct,” Rep. G.K. Butterfield of Wilson said in a statement. “The president is unstable, which should alarm his family, his cabinet, and supporters. The American people deserve better.”

If you agree with these Democratic officeholders, use this template to write our congressional delegation and let your views be known.

Thank you, Melissa!

I wish to take this opportunity to give my sincere thanks to Melissa Warren. The amount of work she has performed on behalf of the BCDP is nothing short of breathtaking. As a member of our Communications team, Melissa was often the voice of calm and reason when things got a little over-the-top. As we all learned, when Melissa speaks, we listen.

I've been given the privilege of following in her footsteps to manage our website. When I look at all the pages and all the detailed content on them, I am truly amazed that one person could build a website with such depth and breathe.

Good luck in your new position, Melissa. The Brunswick Literacy Council is lucky to have you.

Finally, imagine that you are a Republican congressman who has been rated as the least effective member in the House; that you have supported the most corrupt president in US history; that you have betrayed our constitution by refusing to endorse the results of a fair election; that you have blood on your hands after inciting a violent insurrection by racist, right-wing extremists. Right now, you’d probably want to hide. But where? You might look for a place where the Americans you deceived would be least likely suspect. Most of all, you'd want to find someone strong to hide behind. And unlike the image here, you certainly don't want to show up in a crowd anymore.

There have been reports of David Rouzer sightings IN THE BCDP WEBSITE! Can this be true? There’s only one way to find out. Grab your Rouzer detector, (aka: your mouse), click the button below, and start sweeping the pages to conduct your search.
