Cultivating Goodwill & Democracy with the Healing Help of Poetry and Poem-Making |
Dear Poetic Medicine Friends, I am called to write in this September IPM newsletter, before the General Election, an invitation for each of us to consider our circumstances in this country, to consider our individual roles as a part of a democracy, and to encourage people to be sure to register to vote as soon as possible, check your registration status, and of course...vote! In this essay I explore the impact of the recent retreat offered on August 2nd and 3rd in partnership with colleagues Tony Vento and Erika Brown. The retreat we offered was titled Cultivating Goodwill and Democracy with the Healing Help of Poetry & Poem-Making. In the process of considering what happened during the retreat, while writing this essay, I got a strong sense that what we did is bring an inspired life-force to goodwill and especially to democracy. In that retreat, I saw and heard poetry and poem-making shared, with attention given to building trust and courage with the work of Parker Palmer, democracy and goodwill were infused with greater meaning. This opened a pathway of discovery. This caused personal and group break-throughs that would not have happened otherwise. Goodwill and democracy transformed from concepts to felt-sense real-life experience. We are able to share with you the experiences of three people who participated in this retreat. Included within this essay are excerpts from interviews I conducted via Zoom with Darnell Epps, Louise Prochaska and Jerrod Amir Shakir. Through their reflections, responses to questions, and their poems you can learn from and enjoy their process of discovery. |

This essay arrives in advance of me offering this retreat again, in person, following the election, November 15 – 17, in Cardiff, California. Cultivating Goodwill and Democracy will be important then! The November retreat is the 26th year of bringing poetic medicine to this area. If you know someone in the San Diego/Encinitas area, please let them know about this. I hope to see you there! Kindness, John Fox |
