Buzz #40 - The Qbn Hive News |

Welcome to our new subscribers :-) Hard to believe this is our 40th Buzz! It has been a while since the last newsletter as I have needed to take some important downtime for my family. With the hacking of my personal facebook account last month (and its existence still in question) I realise how much I depend on that platform to stay connected with our Hive followers. This newsletter feels like a ‘static form’ of communication and it is really hard to gauge who it reaches and who actually reads it. If you are still here, I am happy. If you have lost me as a facebook contact and wish to reconnect, look me up and ask to be my friend again. My new profile is 'Helen Gibson' which is my maiden name. |

COME AND SAY THAT TO OUR FACES! Glitoris with special guests Downgirl & Backhand 7pm, Friday 22 September Loud. Unapologetic. Hilarious. Fierce AF. Celebrating the release of their eponymous sophomore album (July 14th, Buttercup Records / MGM Distribution) Glitoris emerge from behind their screens, take the trolls by the horns and demand: COME AND SAY THAT TO OUR FACES! Packed full of hi-octane punk freneticism, razor-sharp wit, soaring vocal harmonies, and on-point politics, Glitoris bring much more to the stage than a run-of-the-mill rock show. Expect fists-in-the-air anthems, theatrical badassery, and clown-metal absurdity - all wrapped up in an evening of call-to-arms empowerment. Glitoris has earned a reputation as one of Australia’s most unforgettable live acts. Fiercely political, musically confrontational, and lyrically uncompromising, Keven 007, Malcolm, Mickey and Andrew serve up punk provocation, metal prowess, classic rock riffs and Broadway sass, in an unforgettable performance–equal parts indelible songwriting, accomplished musicianship, and defiant feminist power. |

Possum skin cloak/blanket stories: darning & yarning with Aunty Matilda - Workshop 2 & progress continues... Together we yarned and darned and began the creation of this special possum blanket/cloak depicting our stories of Queanbeyan. As a group we determined the layout of the pelts as well as the stories to be depicted on the blanket. We learnt how to cut and stitch the pelts together to form one piece. A QPRC cultural grant enabled us to carry working on this blanket through a second workshop. We completed the sewing of the pelts together and sketched the layout of our stories to be burned into the underside of the possum blanket. This next stage will take a number of sessions with dates to be announced soon. If you would like to pop in and say hello and see for yourself what this is all about, we will be at the front of The Hive from 10am-12pm this Saturday 12 August. |

HAPI (Heritage-culture Arts Promotions Incorporated) and the 12 Apostles Project HAPI was formed in 1999 by Connee-Colleen Cameron in preparation for the Bicentennial year in 2001. Since Connee's passing in 2021 HAPI members have come together to see the second Apostle be realised and to carry on Connee's legacy. I joined this group after curating and exhibiting her life's work as an artist, activist, agitator and archivist. The exhibtion "Connee-Colleen: Queanbeyan Character" was held in The Hive in 2020. Connee had the concept of the twelve apostles, twelve people who had great influence in different aspects of Queanbeyan’s early establishment. The first apostle was John Gale, named father of Canberra, which stands outside the Queanbeyan Court house since 2001. Another apostle, W.B. Freebody, has finally been created by Neil Dickinson. It has been cast in bronze and was funded some 20 year ago by W.B Freebody’s children, Eunice, Merlin and Terrence. This sculpture is a gift to Queanbeyan by the family in recognition of his great service of forty-one years as a councillor and mayor on Queanbeyan Council. From the age of 35 to 75, Alderman Freebody was involved in every aspect of the life of Queanbeyan and its surrounds, serving on the council during two World Wars, the Depression and subsequent periods of the region's rapid growth and development. He was also a renowned sportsman and businessman. The Freebody family and the members for HAPI are very proud of the sculpture and if all goes to plan it will be placed in the new QPRC building for future generations to admire. If you are interested in helping and becoming involved with HAPI and future Heritage-art projects, please contact Helen at helen@artspirit.com.au. |

Loving our new sign at the front of The Hive! I will be voting YES in this up-coming referendum. So will Aunty Matilda. If you are unsure and wish to learn more, we have a copy of 'The Voice to Parliament' Handbook at The Hive for you to read. It is a clear and simple guide for those that would like to support the Uluru Statement from the Heart, but want to understand what a Voice to Parliament and constitutional recognition actually mean. Old news... but I wanted to share this pic I took of Aunty Matilda holding her "National NAIDOC Female of the Year" award in recognition for all her lifetime of achievements. She has been amazing, and really supportive of our endeavours at The Hive, and I hope we can hold more events to help bridge the gap with all our traditional owners. https://www.naidoc.org.au/award-finalist/aunty-dr-matilda-house-williams |
