OLLI @ SSU Fall 2023

Journey of the Continents

Fridays, September 22nd - October 27th

1-3pm in-person

Earth’s continents are on the move, as they always have been. Through plate tectonics the landmasses are carried by the motions of the mantle below and are steered by the formation and destruction of oceanic plates. This class will follow the deep time adventures of Earth’s continents, as we learn how they have moved across the Earth’s surface over time, been impacted by volcanism, been shifted by earthquakes, and built by the process of continental accretion. The movements record an echo of the ancient oceans & ecosystems otherwise lost to time. We will track the climate changes recorded in the rocks accumulating on each continent as the landmasses evolved through tropical, temperate, and polar environments in seemingly endless iterations.

{OLLI is a learning community for adults age 50+ years old that offers class without homework or tests}

Natural Disaster Preparedness

Are you prepared to interact with the environment at its most chaotic? Get inspired by my Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation presentation "History of Natural Disasters in the Laguna de Santa Rosa Watershed".

Plan & prepare with Appreciating Earth San Francisco Bay Area Emergency Resources. Now is a great time to get prepared for future natural disasters. Take time to consider how you want to react in the case of an earthquake, flood, tornado, hurricane, or fire.

Step #1 pack your go bag

Step #2 make an evacuation plan

Step #3 practice your emergency plan

Step #4 create a comprehensive packing list

When stress levels are high, our memory is less reliable, so use near future low stress moments to plan, prepare & consider what items are important to you. Your list will be more reliable than your memory.
