“How do you like them apples?”

Honestly, I don’t know what this phrase is supposed to mean precisely in the Oscar winning movie, Good Will Hunting. In WWII it was a quip to be said against an enemy when a defense maneuver was successfully deployed. But, it is certainly an iconic line said by Matt Damon in the movie to express delight. 

At last night’s Rosh Hashanah Seder, I asked folks to get to know one another by identifying something about themselves that they all shared. And one group found, through conversation, that they all liked apples. So, now we have an answer: How do you like them apples? Sounds like very much!

And what was even tastier than apples and sweeter than the honey consumed last night was the beauty of community that assembled. Some tuning in right at sunset, some who were already into the morning hours of the new year, and others for whom the near year was on the horizon. That’s what’s so sweet- this community from all over the world straddling across the demarcation from one year to the next, all gathering for goodness. Could the ancient sages have imagined such a possibility?

Some themes ran throughout the sharing. The love of family and learning. The value of kindness. And a very clear interest in matters of social justice. Gathering people from across the globe never feels foreign or distant with a community united in this way- united in heart.  

What a special joy to break bread (challah!) with you and to step foot into the new year together.

MEET OUR GUIDE FOR ROSH HASHANAH II KIMBERLY DUEÑAS

Kimberly Dueñas will lead our second day Rosh Hashanah program. She is the Director of Learning at Jewtina y Co. and a spiritual practitioner. She will guide us in reflections, mindfulness, and identity formation, helping us to guarantee a time of goodness and growth in the new year ahead. Please register HERE for that program.

MEET OUR CANTORIAL SOLOIST ELIZABETH LANGE

Elizabeth H. Lange is thrilled to be serving as Cantorial Soloist with Keeping It Sacred this High Holy Day season!

Elizabeth comes from a musical family and has been singing and playing music with her family for as long as she can remember.  At age 11, Elizabeth founded a children’s summer theater troupe, and, through her middle school, high school, and college years, directed and produced musicals featuring kids in her neighborhood.

Elizabeth regularly served as a Torah reader for the Traditional Minyan at Adas Israel in Washington, D.C., during her years there.  Elizabeth attended Hebrew College’s Prozdor Program and taught Hebrew school at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, Massachusetts, her home congregation.  Elizabeth served as Rosh Drama at Camp Young Judaea Sprout Lake in Verbank, New York, and as a counselor at Camp Grossman in Westwood, Massachusetts.  

Elizabeth has taken an active role on non-profit boards and in Wellesley’s Town Government.  She is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors of Kesher Newton, and has served as President of her Wellesley College alumnae class and as Treasurer of the Wellesley Mothers Forum.  Elizabeth serves as a Town Meeting Member in Wellesley’s Town Meeting.  She has been a member of the Wellesley College Child Study Center’s Parent Committee, and Research Committee, and a room parent for her children’s elementary school classes.

Elizabeth is an attorney who has practiced securities law and was named a Massachusetts Super Lawyer “Rising Star.”  She taught an adult education class on early constitutional law at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley.  A graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, Elizabeth clerked for the Honorable Emily C. Hewitt at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and for the Justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court.  Prior to law school, Elizabeth worked at the U.S. Department of Justice through the Outstanding Scholars Program.  Elizabeth graduated from Wellesley College, magna cum laude and with Departmental Honors in Political Science.

Elizabeth lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts, with her husband, pediatrician Rob Andler, and their children, Emma, Jack, and Lily.

ACCESS JUDAISM

Our Melanie Grohman z"l Access Judaism program is BACK! This program features a broad spectrum of thoughtfully curated Jewish subjects in the realms of history, rituals, culture, philosophy, law, and spirituality. These interactive classes, which include post-class reflection questions, can also count towards requirements of conversion or adult b'nai mitzvah ceremonies. (Think of it like a Judaism 201 type program for those who have already taken a 101 program or are already familiar with the basics of Jewish life). Classes are open to students entering with a diversity of backgrounds.

​This course is taught over Zoom in two sessions of 8 classes each. The classes are flexible and are designed so that a person can choose to take one class, several, a whole session, or both sessions. Suggested donation for one class is $25, one session is $180 and the full program is $300. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Friday night, 10/28 at 5:30pm PT/8:30pm ET, give yourself the gift of space to reflect and rejuvenate with monthly shabbat services. Rabbi Miller and Jeffrey Silverstein will lead the community with Jewish thought and sacred song. Together, we will lift up anniversaries, birthdays, and honor remembrances of our loved ones. This program runs the last Friday night of every month. Access Judaism is a relevant and empowering adult learning program in a fun, relaxed environment. This program features a broad spectrum of thoughtfully curated Jewish subjects in the realms of history, rituals, culture, philosophy, law, and spirituality.
