RECHARGE from Burnout - Holiday Offer, Self-Test, Personal Message

Dear friends & colleagues,

As the holidays approach more doctors, workers, and caregivers are opening up to me about their burnout symptoms. Burnout in physicians has become the norm during this pandemic.

I know first-hand that juggling urgent personal or family needs while also working as a physician is extremely challenging. For the past few weeks, I have been dealing with a family medical emergency. Had I not been there to advocate for my father, his brain tumour would not have been diagnosed. He is now receiving expert treatment and is incredibly grateful to get to live this Christmas. Thank you all for being patient with me as I had to delay some of my work and my usual monthly newsletter.

On a brighter note, this recent experience as well as the numerous requests I am receiving for help with burnout led me to create this new offer:

WHY ADDRESS BURNOUT NOW?

I have seen too many physicians and patients injured by the effects of burnout. In the past 21 years, as an emergency room physician, family physician, and medical psychotherapist, I have lost close friends on both sides of this equation. Cynicism, detachment, and exhaustion lead to errors. Sadly, burnout and errors can push physicians to the brink. Most physicians with burnout deny even serious symptoms due to their strong sense of duty and obligation. Guilt and moral distress lead some doctors to push past safe limits until it's too late. Getting through the denial of even severe symptoms of burnout can be difficult. Do a self-test here.

My goal is to help those suffering from burnout before serious adverse events occur. Too many doctors wait until their health has suffered severely. In some cases, they reach out to me only after a cardiac event or other stress-related illness finally hits. In other cases, their relationships have been injured, or a medical error or complaint has caused them intense stress or forced them to leave their job permanently. I don't want another doctor to suffer unnecessarily from the personal fallout that accompanies burnout. Help is available.

This series is suitable for physicians, nurses, health care professionals, executives, workers, caregivers, and parents.

Personal Message from Marcia

There is no time like a family medical emergency to remind you about what matters most in life. Being with my father through his brain surgery and radiation treatment has been a time to connect in a way we never have before. These last few weeks have been precious, and a great reminder to enjoy each day we get.

I would like to wish you the best this holiday season, and I do hope you take a moment to notice and cherish the people closest to you.

As hard as it is to believe, work goes on without us. My greatest epiphany years ago was to realize that I was not owned by my work, that I was not as important or irreplaceable as others had led me to feel, and that my children and spouse really needed me. Work can certainly be meaningful, rewarding, and helpful - but without my own health and wellbeing, I cannot help anyone for long.

Regarding concerns about population health - we must be aware that we need sustainability in our workforce in order to get through this pandemic. The only way to ensure the sustainability of our health care system and the individuals in it is to understand, address, and prevent the mass burnout that is occurring.

Please be kind to yourself. Be honest with yourself. Talk to your loved ones about what they see in you, and what they want for you. Sometimes your kids, friends, family, or partner can give you important feedback that you may not want to hear. Please listen.

Take this burnout self-test if you are interested.

If you are feeling well at work, thriving, and not burned out at all I am happy to hear it. Hopefully, you will notice what is working effectively and keep up those healthy habits.

From my family to yours, wishing you health, peace, and happiness this holiday and all year round.
