The violent insurrection on January 6th, 2021 was a dark day for our nation. A mob, fueled by conspiracy theories about a stolen election and incited by Donald Trump, defaced our Nation’s Capitol hoping to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election.

Many Michigan Republican lawmakers bear responsibility for stringing along baseless conspiracies and sowing doubt about election processes.

The November 2020 General Election was one of the most secure elections in history with no evidence of substantial voter fraud. Local clerks from all political parties across Allegan County, our state, and the nation worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth election.

The absence of evidence did not matter for State Representative Mary Whiteford (R-80).

She demanded a forensic audit of the election alleging fraud and irregularities. Whiteford even signed on to a letter demanding Vice President Mike Pence delay finalization of election results - something he does not have the power to do.

In light of the events on January 6th, Representative Whiteford has made no public statements condemning the violent Trump-incited mob that stormed the Capitol.

Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. We are calling for Representative Whiteford to disavow her actions, lose her committee assignments, and face further disciplinary action from House Speaker Jason Wentworth for participation in this assault on Democracy.
