The Full Brexit

Newsletter #2 - July 2018

Hello, subscribers!

As the British political establishment continues to tear itself apart, apparently unable to agree even the bare outlines of a Brexit plan, it is more important than ever to make a bold, left-wing case for leaving the European Union, rather than clinging to the status quo. In the next few weeks we plan to publish a detailed analysis of the government's new White Paper, and our own counter-proposals for a Full Brexit.

In the meantime, we have quick reactions to the Chequers deal, news of an event next week on the post-Brexit economy, plus a round-up of new content on the website.

As ever, if you have any ideas or suggestions, or want to get more involved, please contact us at fullbrexit@gmail.com.

The Chequers Deal

The Full Brexit's Richard Tuck has provided instant analysis of Theresa May's Chequers deal on Briefings for Brexit. It is, he says, a trap for the left, seeking to lock in EU rules on competition and state aid - Labour should therefore completely oppose it. Worryingly, it's perhaps enough of a shoddy compromise that the EU might just accept it.

Is Britain's Growth Model Broken –
and Can Brexit Help to Fix It?

The Full Brexit's Chris Bickerton will be launching his new paper, Rebalancing the British Growth Model, at Policy Exchange on Monday 23 July at 17:00. The paper situates the 2016 Leave vote within the wider context of Britain’s flexible labour market and consumption-driven growth model and argues that British growth needs to be rebalanced, with more emphasis on investment and exports. Brexit provides an opportunity to achieve this historic change in Britain’s political economy but only if a transformation in the UK’s relations with the EU can serve as a platform for a deeper reflection on how the British economy grows and how the gains from this growth are distributed. Chris will present the paper, followed by a panel discussion including the former permanent secretary to the Treasury, Lord Macpherson. Everyone is welcome, and we strongly encourage TFB supporters to attend. Registration is essential. The paper will be published by Policy Exchange next week, and we will re-post on TFB.

The Chimera of Workers' Rights in the EU

One of Remainers’ great fears is that Brexit will undermine workers’ rights. In a new Analysis for TFB, labour historian Mary Davis shows that this rests on a total misunderstanding of the EU. Far from gifting rights to British workers, the EU has systematically undermined the rights workers won for themselves in domestic struggles.

Extend Public Ownership

Contrary to mainstream “Corbynista” opinion, the problems of capitalism cannot be resolved merely by an anti-austerity level of state spending, argues Danny Nicol in a new Proposal for TFB. Structural change in our economy is necessary. Leaving the EU creates the opportunity for a radically new approach.

The Irish Border

Peter Ramsay and Chris Bickerton published an op-ed in The Irish Times, based on their earlier Proposal for The Full Brexit. They insist that the only way Brexit can work is for both the UK and Irish governments to exercise their sovereignty and make the border work.

TV Appearance

The Full Brexit's Lee Jones appeared on a Renegade Inc. talk show, screened on RT this week, on the deep causes of the Leave vote. With Dr Lisa Mckenzie, he discussed the alienation of working-class voters from the political elite, the opportunity Brexit presents to revive representative democracy, and the possible consequences of squandering this opportunity.
