Scribbles by Shirley What a fun month for our whole family. For the Grandkids June included end of school year exams, return from university, parties, sporting events, report cards, Adam's graduation, Parker at OFSSA in Toronto, football championship games, family, BBQs, slo-pitch, summer jobs and birthdays. For me, it was a time to read the paper in the morning, time to walk to do all my errands, live theatre and music, Almont Porchfest, movies with friends and staff, dinner and brekkie out with friends, yoga, museum visits and more time with the Grandkids- nothing better than when the Grands drop in to 'help' and empty the fridge! Al and I love it. I've been to loads of football games, had the excitement of watching Parker (eldest of Triple Trouble) via live stream from OFSSA (running in the 4x100 relay where they broke an Almonte High School record), been on day trips with Al and celebrated Father's Day with both sides of the family. A highlight was my friend and her husband visiting from England and staying with us for a few days. Phyllis and I graduated in 1971 as RNs from the Ottawa Civic School of Nursing. It was so great to catch up with them. There was some work done this month too! Lots of projects are started and/ or planned over the summer and fall. It's great to see so many of our customers replenishing their supply of maple products and to purchase gifts. Reminder to call ahead to ensure someone is in the office or Maple Gift Shoppe. I have just started pulling out pictures and stories for our "50 Flipping Years" anniversary of the Pancake House. Former staff, please save the date for our Staff Alumnae celebration on Family Day weekend. Enjoy planning your summer, whether it is a far away vacation or a staycation. Our newsletters have lots of great ideas of where to visit in our region. Enjoy the sun, warmth, pool, beach or boat. Happy Canada Day! Sweet maple wishes to you, Shirley Fulton-Deugo 4th Generation Owner |

What Happens At Fulton's in the Off-Season? We do get that question often! While the Pancake House is only open for the Winter Magic and Maple Harvest 10-week season, lots happens during the remainder of the year. As well as planning and prep for the next season, we also ship our products (syrup, gourmet, gifts and spa) all over Canada and the U.S. year-round on a daily basis. Here is an order of Fancy Leaf bottles that we have just prepared to send out for a conference as gifts for the delegates. |

Springing Into Summer The change of seasons is always exciting at Fulton's and we can't get enough of it. There are always signs of new life and growth around our beautiful 400 acres. |

It's Strawberry Season! We are so excited that it's strawberry season. It's another staff job for the off-season, prepping them for the freezer for future jam. And a few popped into our mouths while we were hulling them- how can anyone resist a fresh strawberry or three? |

The Confectionist Shelley Thompson has worked in the Pancake House at Fulton's for close to ten years. This year she ventured out on a new business endeavour making delicious old-fashioned candy from scratch, with the freshest of ingredients, including six flavours of homemade Fudge as well as Peanut Brittle, English Toffee and Spiced Walnuts. |
|
|
You can find The Confectionist at the Carleton Place Farmers Market on Saturday mornings and the Arnprior Market on Sunday mornings. Drop by to say hello, try a sample and pick up your favourite confectionary to take home! There are often daily specials like Fudge Dipped Marshmallows and Fudgy Worms. Orders are welcome and encouraged, and can be placed by text at 613-410-7676 or through her Facebook page. |

Welcome Little One Taffy was keeping a surprise! We can't wait for you to meet this little darling during the 2019 Winter Magic and Maple Harvest season. This brand new little baby goat is settling in well amongst the chickens, cats, dogs and other goats. She loves to snuggle and likes nothing better than to fall asleep with her nose tucked into your neck. Taffy doesn't seem to mind a bit, as she can take some time off from mothering to eat her breakfast! |

Remember When? Peterson's & Fulton's In the early 1960s CBC's TV "Country Canada" with John Foster produced a half hour show about maple and our family. It took one week, three tractor trailers of editing and camera equipment and many talented people including cameramen, sound managers and producers. What a great experience! After the first airing of this show more and more people came to visit. My parents and Uncle Johnny, always the country hosts, wanted to have some food to serve/ share with visitors. Below are photos of the horses ready to haul the equipment into the bush as well as the rather large camera set up! |

Peterson's Ice Cream produced delicious ice cream in Almonte. As our family was and still is crazy over ice cream with maple syrup, we decided to ask founder/ owner Louie Peterson if he would slightly underfill the small tubs of vanilla ice cream that they made. Soon we were modifying a window of the sugar camp to service ice cream and fresh, often warm, maple syrup to our customers who had seen the CBC TV show. This was the beginning of serving food at Fulton's. The word spread and more and more people came to visit. |

Mom, Dad and Uncle Johnny had been shipping maple syrup mostly to Western Canada by rail. Often the packages arrived in perfect condition, except for the holes that had been punched in the bottom of the metal cans to drain the syrup out of! Needless to say, not all the syrup actually made it to its destination but someone enjoyed it. The photo to the left is of Shirley's Mother, Hazel Fulton, taken in the 1950s, capping a one-gallon can of maple syrup. The label says Fulton Brothers and has a Canadian Federal license number on it. The labels had to be applied very carefully by hand with wallpaper paste. |

Our family had a meeting around the kitchen table and plans were put into place to build a pancake house. In 1969 we opened our doors with 3 tables and 12 chairs inside and a few picnic tables outside. Our kitchen was equipped with 2 electric household griddles, we called some local ladies to come in and help out...… and Fulton's Pancake House was born! In 2019 years we will be celebrating 50 Flipping Years. As remembered by Shirley Fulton Deugo. |

Grandparenting Each year we are privileged to host a Momma Robin building a nest and raising her young over the top of the door to the Pancake House. This year there was one lonely egg (an only child!). We think he/ she got lots of Mom-time and was pretty lucky. He/ she was obviously well-fed and grew to fill the nest. We carefully captured some shots of the baby as it grew and tried as much as possible to keep away from the nest to give the little family some privacy. Happy travels baby Robin and good luck in life! Meanwhile, the work is not done for Momma Robin, as she has started raising a second brood already. |

Featured Product for July Fulton's Organic Maple Syrup! |
|
|
We thought that featuring Fulton's 100% Organic Maple Syrup in July would just make so much sense. Maple syrup is incredibly versatile. You can add it to salad dressings, bbq sauces/ marinades, in a fruit dip (see our Recipe of the Month below) or pour it over ice cream or fruit crumble, just to name a few uses. There are lots of recipes on our website featuring maple if you need ideas. Fulton's syrup is available in many sizes, in both plastic and glass containers. Once opened, it should be refrigerated and also freezes well. And it's made locally! | | |

Recipe of the Month Maple Fruit Dip It's such a delight to have fresh local fruit available. This Maple Fruit Dip is super easy to make and a crowd pleaser. It is just fabulous with strawberries. You can get fresh-picked local strawberries at roadside stands and farmer's markets all over Lanark County at this time of year. We recommend McGregor's Produce which has many locations, including farm stands in Carleton Place and Almonte. |
