Happy Holidays from everyone at R&K Productions and Balancing the Scales.

It was one year ago this month when Balancing the Scales had its first screening in Atlanta. None of us at R&K Productions knew then whether a film about the cultural barriers holding back women would resonate with a wide audience. A year later, we know the answer. It has been broadcast nationwide on public television, and on a daily basis we hear from firms, corporations, and nonprofit organizations who want to share the film and the discussion with their colleagues and employees.

There is an emerging interest in exposing barriers against working women. Sexual harassment in the workplace did not even have a name in the 1960s. Sixty years later, we finally have #MeToo. And now it is time to look behind the curtain, to bring to the national conversation not only overt sexual harassment, which is certainly overdue, but also to see on a national level the power imbalance and antiquated attitudes which leave everyone, men and women alike, making decisions from a playing field that is far from level—attitudes which deny women a fair shot at leadership roles in all walks of life.

We are so pleased to announce that R&K Productions is in development of our next feature documentary, An Invisible Truth.

We have learned so much traveling the country this year screening Balancing the Scales. We have listened to firm and corporate leadership say they do not understand why women choose to leave before they reach the top of the profession, while in the same room, women pull us aside and tell us exactly why. This has convinced us that the time for a national conversation has arrived, about not only gender equality, but about equality for all disenfranchised groups.  And not only in the law, but in politics, tech, entertainment, and all walks of life.  We need a catalyst for a national conversation about the real definition of equality.  An Invisible Truth will continue the conversation started in Balancing the Scales, exploring the barriers faced due to gender, race, sexual orientation, and disability.  

Our national mental image of leaders being “male and pale” is outdated. We need diversity and inclusion in leadership in both business and politics.  Not only because diversity is imperative to profit and survival in today’s world, but also because a broadening of our national concept of leadership and equality is a moral imperative.

An Invisible Truth will highlight individuals who not only break through the glass ceiling, but shatter it. We will keep you updated on our development schedule. In the meantime, please contact us with your thoughts about who might be a good fit for an interview.
