Let's vote and compost!

Vote Yes for SPLOST II and EHOST!

Recent community input helped to ensure that clean energy initiatives is a project category that SPLOST II (Special Purpose Local Optional Sales Tax) will fund. Hooray! Thanks to all of you who took the survey that Commissioner Ted Terry created seeking input on our district's priorities for the SPLOST II money.

But we can't stop now. We need everyone to go out and vote yes for both SPLOST II and EHOST (Equalized Homestead Option Sales Tax). The two are linked together. Both must be approved by voters, or neither will be enacted.

Also, our friends at the Coalition for a Diverse Decatur & Dekalb have put together a great overview of the 5 homestead exemption measures that are on the Decatur ballot. Click here. The coalition fully supports all of the measures and encourages you to do the same.

Early voting ends at 7 pm. this Friday, and you can vote at any of the early voting locations listed here. If you vote on November 7th, polls will be open from 7 am to 7 pm but you must vote at your regular precinct location.

Composting

Mike Barcik in compost video.

We have received several questions recently about composting. When we compost, not only do we generate rich soil that is great for growing plants and food, but we also prevent our food waste from decomposing in landfills where it leads to the creation of methane gas.

A while back, Decatur resident Mike Barcik did a great video for us about home composting. The link is here, and we encourage everyone to watch it if you have even the slightest interest in trying composting at your home. He does a great job of explaining and demonstrating how composting can really be a simple process.

We have also created a table highlighting different ways to compost in our local area. Click here to see a larger version, with active links, of the table pictured below. We have included information to show how the options compare with regards to cost, effort, and types of material that can be composted.
