Learn: Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)

DAFs are charitable investment accounts that help donors get immediate tax deductions, grow their charitable gift, and direct their money to charity at a future date when they are ready to give.

Resource Generation has created this thorough guide to DAFs. While the guide is centered from an anti-capitalist perspective, it shares pros and cons about DAFs that can help you determine if they may be a helpful tool for your giving, regardless of your economic or moral orientation.

Rad Reflections

When was the last time you gave a gift to a non-profit and it felt amazing?

Your feelings may be telling you that this gift was strongly in alignment with your beliefs or purpose. Think about the parts of this giving experience that made you feel this way and explore how or where you may be able to replicate that with a future gift.

Hot Topic: Alumni Giving No Longer Part of US News and World Report College Rankings

If you have been giving to your alma mater because your gift increases rankings and the value of your degree... it's time to rethink your strategy. US News and World Report is no longer using alumni giving to rate colleges.

What do you do now?

  • You can still give to the important programs at your school that mattered to you as a student and whose current reputation matters to you now. Your gift still makes a difference.

  • Instead of or in addition to giving to your college, give to a school that is aligned with your broad philanthropic values. If there is a student population you want to help, if there is a research program you believe in - other schools you didn't go to may be worthwhile recipients of your gifts.

  • Give to something else entirely. What were you missing in your giving experience to your university that you may find by giving to another type of organization?
