Letter From Your Councillors
After sending our latest newsletter we received further information from  Ben and Jonathan Sprawson  which we share with you in this update. Ben has done a detailed analysis of the proposed Midtown Amendment in an effort to better understand Midtown and what the future may hold. We share his images below and a link to his website for his perspective. What is evident is that the possible proposed population far exceed what was contemplated.

Our goal remains to be transparent about the importance of this Official Plan amendment and the impact these land use permissions have on how Midtown is developed.

Some have suggested that without growth nodes, the density of our local neighbourhood streets will have to double. Recent Provincial legislation has provided permission for the building of 3 units on each property as of right. We will be growing in each of growth nodes to achieve the Town wide population targets mandated by the Province. We have asked staff to provide what the current build out population will be in each of the growth nodes to ensure we have a complete view of how the Town will meet the Provincial targets.

The Official Plan amendment must be realistic about the level of intensification 43 hectares of land can support. We understand the need to provide housing in an effort to help solve the housing crisis as detailed in our Housing Pledge Commitment to the province. We know we can achieve the Provincial growth targets for Midtown and make a positive contribution to the Town's overall population growth without the unintended consequences of over intensification

We strongly encourage you to come out this Tuesday May 23 to the Planning and Development meeting at 6:30 pm. Delegations are welcomed.

The time is now to stand up, speak up and or support those who do so on your behalf. Let's strive to do better.

See May 23: 6:30  at Town Hall.

Our last " Letter from your Councillors"
This coming Tuesday, May 23 6:30 pm Council and residents will hear staff's presentation on the proposed Official Plan amendment for Midtown.
THIS is the meeting for residents to learn of the proposed plans as well as provide feedback to your Town council and staff. The next step in the planning process will be the recommendation report or what is often referred to as the  ‘decision meeting’ on June 26th.

The clock is ticking! The time is NOW to get involved. Have you checked out our midtownoakville.ca website to learn about Midtown? Stand up, show up, speak up and make your council aware of your views.

Here are a few key points that we have heard, we welcome your feedback through a delegation or email to Town Clerk and Council.
  • We believe that we must be realistic about the level of intensification 43 hectares of land can support. We understand the need to provide housing in an effort to solve the housing crisis as detailed in our Housing Pledge Commitment to the province. We know we will achieve the Provincial growth targets for Midtown and make a positive contribution to the Town's overall population growth without the unintended consequences of over intensification.  What will the population be with the proposed Floor Space Index of 10**  at   2031 and 2051 and after?
  • We need to ensure that the language in the OPA reflects what is important for all the developments: that means language like  "shall" which means will do,  not just encourage or promote.
  • We need to ensure the exemptions that allow more floor space (height ) are balanced so we are achieving the right community services ( daycare, doctor's office space, grocers, work share, car share and more)  for those who will call Midtown home.
  • We need a master plan for the overall community including an Energy Master plan.
  • We need to consider how this community will increase our rental supply, support family friendly design as well as those at different life stages and how we provide the maximum amount of green and play space for all ages and stages. We must design for the social health of this new community.
  • We need a Master Plan for how this community will evolve which provides certainty to all stakeholders.
  • We need to support developments that thoughtfully contribute to a great community while supporting new housing.
  • We need to incorporate best practices from other areas, optimal transportation solutions, great built form that is welcoming and recognizes the changing impacts of remote work.
  • We need to attract local employment within Midtown.
  • We need: you fill in the blank and come share them with us on Tuesday May 23.
We can create a vibrant, livable urban Midtown community together:  We require your input and support to do so.

See you on May 23 at 6:30 pm.
Janet and Dave
