You may have noticed in reading the scroll of Esther last week for Purim, that one very important character was missing from the story-- God. That's right: nowhere in the whole megillah is the name of God. Now, does that mean that God had nothing to do with the story? Nothing to do with Esther's rise to the throne? Nothing to do with her ability to persuade the King to annul the wicked decree? Not necessarily. Sometimes, in Judaism, we have to look for what is there just as much as what is not there.

We learn this when we learn the saying that the Torah is written with black fire on white fire. That means that the white spaces between the letters matter just as much as the letters themselves.

Likewise, the prophets tell us to see and care for those who might otherwise be invisible in society-- like the widow, the stranger, the orphan.

Today marks the start of Women's History Month. It is a time to celebrate women, and gender non-binary folks, throughout Jewish history. It is our time to celebrate women rabbis including those who were ordained before the person we think of as the first officially ordained woman, Rabbi Sally Priesand, in 1972. It is a time to celebrate the women who sharpened the sages' understanding of Halachah (like Bruriah and Yalta and Rachel...). It is a time to uplift the courageous work of Jewish women social justice advocates who were instrumental in the movements of suffrage, labor union organizing, racial equity, and other movements; and those who still do today.

This coming Thursday, and every Thursday this month and beyond, we will of course encourage the study of Talmud by people of all genders, and especially those of us who have historically been denied this opportunity. This coming Sunday, we will celebrate the feminine aspects of God in the Jewish tradition, and contemplate what it means to recognize God as non-binary during our Access Judaism class. Next Tuesday we will learn about the topic of Infertility in the Ancient World and the implications for women. And, our honoring continues beyond this month alone. Thank you for celebrating with us!

Together, we’re #keepingitsacred...

Rabbi Heather Miller,

Founder, Keeping It Sacred

CHILDREN'S SOCIAL JUSTICE BOOK CLUB

This past week, Pastor Jeanette Jara of Harbor Christian Church invited Rabbi Miller to speak about Social Justice in the Jewish Tradition to her Children's Social Justice Book Club. We spoke about: The imperative to engage in social justice and tikkun olam/fix the broken world. The kids identified the brokenness they would like to fix including: polluted streams, too many guns, deforestation, and hunger.  We acknowledged that it was a big task and that the rabbis in the Mishnah 1,800 years ago told us it is not our obligation to complete the task but also we aren’t allowed to not try.  We also recounted he bold actions of Moses and Esther who each stood up for justice for inspiration. May we each be so inspired!

LENTEN PREACHING SERIES AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH PASADENA

The Rev. Mike Kinman, Rector of All Saints Church, Pasadena, has invited Rabbi Miller to preach in the 2021 Lenten Preaching Series using The Woman’s Lectionary by The Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney. The Woman's Lectionary uses an expansive gender-explicit approach and, in the Psalms, explicit feminine language and pronouns for God.

Church House, the Episcopal press will publish the Lectionary and All Saints is honored to have been given exclusive access to it for the liturgical year which began with the First Sunday of Advent.

Rabbi Miller will preach at 11:15am PT/ 2:15pm ET for the third week of Lent, this coming Sunday, March 7, and will hang out for coffee online on zoom after as well. Come listen to a Jewish take on the story of Genesis from a proudly feminist perspective.
