Masoute, one of Kay Blada's daily collectors, sorts plastic in Haiti.

MONTHLY PROGRESS

For the last few months, civil unrest in Haiti has made global headlines. Now, things are slowly returning to normal and Kay Blada has finally been able to transport and recycle the plastic that has been waiting in our facility for the last few months.

At the end of March, we transported 4,099 pounds of plastic to Port-au-Prince to be recycled!

ADDITIONS TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Kay Blada also added 2 new members to our Board of Directors. The Board is comprised of industry professionals in recycling, non-profit management, and economic development and serves as a group of important advisors for KBR.

Blada still serves as Kay Blada's Executive Director, and we are excited to welcome our new members to the board!

Our new Board Chair is Eric Ginsburg.

Eric Ginsburg is the immediate past Clerk of the Friends Committee on National Legislation, a Quaker lobbying organization in the public interest. Eric previously spent 35 years with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, serving as a senior policy advisor to EPA’s air pollution program. Eric holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, in Political Economy of Natural Resources and from the North Carolina Central University School of Law.

Shirley Drechsel has also been appointed to the board.

Shirley Drechsel enjoyed her 33-year career as a financial advisor specializing in socially responsible investing and in forming human connections. She continues to seek ways to bring together the energy and talents of individuals, to create a greater and more vibrant whole. Her interests range from art and music to nurturing her garden.

Meet the Rest of Our Board

We are still fundraising for Kay Blada's new location in Haiti.

In January, Kay Blada purchased its first plot of land. Previously, we were renting a small yard in town and did not have enough space for all the plastic we were collecting. Now, we will be able to grow into a much larger organization and continue to clean up the streets of Hinche.

On this new land, we will have our own covered area for collecting, cleaning, and compacting plastic, as well as a solar array to power our equipment (generously donated by Birdseye Renewable Energy). Kay Blada is committed to running its entire operation as sustainably as possible.

We have been fundraising to make the payments on this land. Of the $20,000 needed, we have raised $7,500. Many of our supporters have shared our campaign on Facebook, and we really appreciate that. Please support us and help us reach our goal of $20,000!
