TROPHALLAXIS Journeymen, Journeyman Candidates, & Master Beekeepers in Washington State: 6:30PM Wednesday Oct.2nd TROPHALLAXIS meeting will feature a 45-minute presentation by Eli Ocheltree on Apis mellifera as a research animal model, in many ways more versatile and important to us than rats, mice, Drosophila melanogaster, primates, and other animal models in biomedical research, probably the first use of animals in research that comes to mind for most of the public. Bees are used in more types of research than just medical - think robotics, engineering, sociology, environmental issues. Discussion will follow and we will see where it goes from there. If you are interested in joining this monthly Zoom discussion group, and are in WASBA Journeyman class or already Journeyman/Master, please contact us for the zoom link. |

Trophallaxis is a Journeyman and Beyond online networking and sharing group for all who have taken or are taking the academic portion of the WASBA Journeyman. We are meeting via zoom on first Wednesdays of the month. Although hosted by SnoKing Beekeepers, this discussion group is open to all Washington State beekeepers who are Journeyman or Master level, and those who are taking or have taken the academic course of WASBA Journeyman certification. For the zoom link or for more information, call or text Eli Ocheltree 206-859-7392 or email eliochel@snokingbka.org |

CONFERENCE – We hope to see you there. We will have a booth in the Vendor Room, so look for SnoKing there and please stop by, even just to say ‘hi’. With so much of life being online today, this is a chance to match people to names and faces we may have only known by zoom, text or email. In addition, if you have paid your 2024-2025 SnoKing dues and not yet received a packet with a Queen Wheel, Pollen Chart, Rulers and a Varroa Treatments Chart, please pick one up there from our booth. If you renew with SnoKing at the conference, just show us the receipt on your phone, we will be glad to give you a packet right away or send one by mail later. If you really like the packet but don’t wish to pay dues, you can purchase a packet for $10 or by mail. For comparison, a similar queen wheel is sold by Mann Lake for $29.95, Item QC122 the Hambly Queen Dial. |

Online registration has closed; however, walk-in registration will be only $100 Saturday morning but doesn’t include refreshments and Saturday. The agenda allows for a 2-hour lunch break and we will be at our booth. If you are still deciding, here’s the Conference agenda as of today: https://wasba.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/WASBAConference2024-ProgramWeb.pdf?mc_cid=7e85393944&mc_eid=ab5e9abff6y: |

HONEY TASTING There has been a last-minute decision to have a honey tasting at the conference. No prize has been mentioned but it is really fun to taste the range of flavors real honey has, so we hope you bring yours to share. Looking for JOURNEYMAN SERVICE CREDITS? Articles written for local newsletters are worth two service credits per article. Because there will be no recordings of the presentations, our fellow beekeepers who can’t attend would appreciate reports. Those who did attend may also be interested in discussions, critiques or followup on the talks. SnoKing (and perhaps a club even closer to you!) would like to publish your articles in this newsletter. |

CLASSES Apprentice Course starts this Thursday Oct. 3rd . Journeyman has started 6:30PM Mondays and Beginner at 6:30PM on Tuesdays. Last minute registration is still possible at: www.snokingbka.org/classes . We can get digital manual to you right away while mailing you the print version asap. If you have questions/concerns, particularly about the level at which to start, contact Eli Ocheltree 206-859-7392, eliochel@snokingbka.org . |
PLEASE NOTE: WASBA newsletter mentions that some clubs have been using out-of-date manuals and tests when teaching the WASBA curriculum. SnoKing would like to reassure you that we always use the up-to-date materials. Also, as soon as the 2025 manuals are out, we will be sending electronic updates for each level at which any of our members were certificated, at no additional cost. However, we do understand why other clubs might use out-of-date materials because WASBA does not refund for manuals it has rendered obsolete by revision, usually unannounced. |

Master Beekeeper Certificate at Cornell University Cornell is still offering 33 1/3% discount for SnoKing members. This online, internationally recognized Master program is completely separate from the WASBA curriculum we use for all other levels. The only Cornell prerequisite is 3 years beekeeping experience. The cost of Cornell Master Beekeeper ($599.99 after discount) is the right option for many beekeepers. Ask Eli Ocheltree eliochel@snokingbka.org for the discount code if you decide to register and for the best contact phone number if you wish more information about the program than Eli can give. |

Policy Statement: There will be one essential rule at Trophallaxis and at any meeting or activity hosted by SnoKing Beekeepers. Ron Robinson stated it best for our Facebook discussion group, when he said: "SKBA prides itself on the fact we are not like other groups on Facebook. We have become known as a safe group for keepers of all levels to comfortably ask questions and opinions without being blasted or publicly humiliated for asking what may seem like a very basic question to others. Any harassing, bullying, demeaning behavior, or such will not be tolerated. We have a zero tolerance policy and such behavior will result in immediate removal from club and all club activities." |
We look forward to talking bees with you at monthly meetings. Our next meeting will be 6:30PM Wednesday October 23. |

The mission of the SKBA, a 501c3 member club of WASBA, is to provide educational opportunities, networking and support to beekeepers and people interested in honey bees, particularly those involved in small-scale beekeeping in Washington State west of the Cascades. |
