Dear Shield Family, A huge thanks to all of you for continuing to support and encourage us!! The 10 Days of Rage protest last month across the country culminated quietly and we are back to normal. New students are joining our Shield family each week. We are relocating our offices to a fixer-upper building down the street. It has a huge mango tree for our children to play in the shade! This past week a mother brought in her 15-year-old daughter who has a genetic disorder. She asked her mom, “If I come here each week, will my body stop hurting so much?” We know we can help her with some physical therapy, but we can also love her so much on each visit and make sure she has a special time away from her normal schedule each week. Thank you for changing lives here in Nigeria. You are difference makers! Best, Director Laura Sharpe

Center fixing up abandoned building for new office It’s not easy to work to relocate an entire nonprofit office and one’s family, but we are doing it! The major issue with our new location is the house has not been lived in for 15 years! Our soccer team of over 20 athletes is scrubbing away each day.

Center grieves loss of boy with cerebral palsy Our sweet Mahfuz had been wasting away from malnutrition for the past year, but died from malaria in early September. Because children with disabilities face a lot of stigma in Nigerian culture, his mother never took him anywhere but the Shield City center. Read our tribute to Mahfuz.

Child of the Month feature Little Jawad, who is autistic, could not sit for more than 2 seconds and at home his family had to try to feed him while he was running around the house. He has started communicating with his family and sitting for longer periods for meals- in just one year! Such progress!

Update on Souleiman, our brave boy with cerebral palsy Souleiman is doing so well! Souleiman is our sweet 9-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who we met when he was begging for food in downtown Kano. He walks to our house every morning now for a breakfast of eggs, tea and bread. His health has improved so much with the extra nutrition.
