Hey there; More Phantom stories are out now from Frew, in case you're keen.

The Phantom #1942 Out NOW!

Big thanks to Dudley, and Glenn and Rene for pushing these short stories out close together, I hope they resonate with readers. End of March saw "Said the Joker to the Thief" hit newsstands in The Phantom #1940. This month, we have 2 more.

Firstly, The Phantom #1942 (seen here with a traditional drawn cover from my friend and great illustrator Grange Wallis),"Paint It Black" sees the Phantom walking the streets of Saigon as an ordinary man*, and coming across an old Phantom foe. Keep your eyes peeled for a "Phamous" Phantom artist cameo, and friends of mine from the fun Phantom podcast "X-Band" by the gents at Chronicle Chamber.

Some sample pages below, including the colour version of the black and white story cover that appears in the comic. When I dropped the teaser in March's newsletter, I wasn't sure when it would be published, so it's nice to see it wasn't too far away.

Griffith Animation Cartoon Corner #2

IN THE DRINK (2019)

Last month I began sharing a link to past Griffith Film School animation short films while I'm currently in the mix of lecturing the 2023 graduate animation students through their pre-production. There's a fun mix of 2D, 3D and stop motion films currently in the works, further drafts of the storyboards and animatics currently taking place, and exciting to see their concept art further visualise their intent of their scripts.

This month's recommendation is a light-hearted short, and one I also had the pleasure of Supervising from prep-production, and into post, by Ashley Henry, and produced by Shona Robinson: IN THE DRINK - a funky little film set in the 1970s as a cruise liner sinks into shark-infested waters. Filled with a little bit of "weird science" and whimsy, dig this short film especially if you like your mermaids made more of "cocktail" than "fish tail"...

PhantomCave Review interview

- April 2023

A couple of months ago I was asked by a nice young man named Brad Kelly at PhantomCave Reviews to record a podcast for his show. I had met Brad as a young reader who had come along to the conventions to visit Frew when he was getting into Phantom and Kid Phantom comics, and I always appreciate the enthusiasm he shows towards his interest in the comics and the people who create them.

So, Brad and I had a chat and I aimed to answer his questions, with the video dropping last month.Tthanks Brad for your kindness and interest, and all the very best to the YouTube channel and review show. Here's the spiel:

"This week's Interview features award-winning Phantom writer & Artist, Paul Mason. Paul Discusses working on Kid Phantom, Deep Season 4 and his more recent continuing series Phantom In Vietnam stories."

Final words, thought-streams and jibber jabber:

Hello to the O.G subscribers, and hello to the new subscribers, and welcome too if you got here from the masoncomics website direct, or any friends and family still hanging with me here, following my stuff.

Apologies for still being a bit quiet here, we're just trying to take care of things a day at a time, and though my time is limited around work and commitments, and I'm finding it tough to stay on top of the to-do list and overdue mailouts, we are safe and doing our best. Much love to my fiancé Amanda and the family while we march on, and thanks too to Amanda for her assistant editing (and recent writing efforts) for our work at Frew.

I hope you too are safe and well wherever you are and whatever you're doing. Feel free to drop me a line with any suggestions you might have for things you'd like brought up in this newsletter space, and I'll try to only bother you when I've got something decent to share. Thanks for your ongoing support, and appreciation for the comics and drawings. Share the website address for newsletter sign ons if you think you might know someone who would be keen to see this stuff or catch some news and comic info.

Anyways,

Warm regards,

Paul.
