Women of the World

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

February 6th, 2023

Happy New Year from all of us at the WoW Team! We’ve hit the ground running in 2023 and are excited as we prepare for our signature fundraising event, the Annual Fashion Show & Cultural Gala. Join us on March 8th, International Women’s Day, as we celebrate the amazing women involved with WoW and the diversity of cultures found here in Utah. We will serve hors d’oeuvres and beverages from our talented restaurant sponsors, host a live auction and hear from Gail Miller our keynote speaker. You will see amazing cultural dress during the International Fashion Show and get to meet clients, staff, and friends of Women of the World. Supporting the Fashion Show builds the bridge of unity and support between us and our forcibly displaced neighbors. The event gives our friends and clients a chance to share their cultural dress as well as stories of their journey toward self-reliance here in their new home in Utah.

We are still looking for sponsors and live auction items and we invite you to tell anyone you know who might be interested. By sponsoring Women of the World’s Fashion Show & Cultural Gala, you are making a direct contribution to supporting forcibly displaced women in Salt Lake City, Utah. Every year we rely on the generosity of our local community members (individual, corporate, and foundation) to support us in this vital work.

January's Activities

WoW has compiled all of our 2022 data and created our annual Impact Report which you can access on our website. It is always useful to look back at what we have accomplished in our WoW community and see the growth in our organization. This past year, we saved $456,000 through our Customized Service and Advocacy program. This program encompasses a wide array of support including childcare, civics, legal aid, healthcare, food security, and housing. Our volunteers have been extremely generous and have contributed more than 1,000 volunteering hours. And our Annual Earnings Increase reached well over a million dollars through our Economic Empowerment program.

Programs | Women of the World

We recognize that the needs of each woman or girl requires personalization. We help fulfill these needs through customized service plans that cater to each woman's personal needs. With such a diverse clientele demographic, representing women from all over the world at various points in their life with unique skillsets and dreams, the path to success is not a one-size-fits all.

English Classes

Our English classes have been growing as we welcome new clients - we’ve started a new level to accommodate our newest students, many from Afghanistan. We are so grateful for our hardworking volunteer English Teachers!

This month, we also hosted a clinic to assist our clients applying for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP). This temporary pandemic program through the state of Utah expires this month, so we wanted to host a week where clients could come in whenever they were available to apply for this program. Empowering women and their families takes many forms, but one of the most important ways to help is to ensure secure and affordable housing - especially when they are hit with unforeseeable emergencies.

College Readiness Month

To help our clients prepare for college, WoW celebrated January as College Readiness Month. Several young women toured the U of U campus and received support and advice in submitting their college applications. We held workshops for parents to learn more about how to help their children prepare for college and how to apply for financial aid programs. WoW staff and clients also went to the State Capitol to encourage state leaders to pass bill H.B. 102. This bill would allow all residents of Utah, regardless, of legal status, to pay in-state tuition rates. This is a step toward equity in higher education. Education is an important step for many of our clients on their pathway to economic independence.

PBS Interview

On January 26, Samira was interviewed on PBS by Mary Dickson to give more details about how Women of the World supports women making a new home in Utah through our Fashion Show fundraiser. You can watch that interview by clicking on the link below. We are excited to see you all in March at this event!
