Why Change is Hard

Change is hard on purpose.

It’s because our brain is trying to keep us safe and comfortable. It’s because diving into change is scary, uncertain and vulnerable. Doing what you have always done is familiar. Our mind clings to what is familiar, because what is familiar is safe. The mind is constantly looking for patterns and repetitive action of what we have done in the past.

When you try to change and do something new, your brain will battle you because that is how it has been wired.  The mind is wired to avoid pain. If you want to break through and create change, you have to be intentional in the thoughts you think. If you do what you have always done, you will stay where you have always been. If you want to change, you have to challenge yourself to think new thoughts to create new actions.

Change is uncomfortable because it is doing something different than what you are currently doing. Why be uncomfortable when you can just stay the same? Change is hard on purpose because the new actions of overcoming will make you stronger. Just like lifting weights is hard. It’s hard because lifting the weights will make you stronger.

If you say to yourself “I don’t want discomfort in my life.” I want to challenge you to find a way to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. I promise you it’s worth it. And it doesn’t happen overnight, it happens when you recognize that there will always be a little battle in your mind to not want to do something. Be intentional and choose to think “yes, this is hard, but I am going to do it anyway!” And find the pleasure in overcoming hard things.

The mindset of change will be the recognition that your brain will constantly feed you thoughts that will make you want to stay in the same patterns. But you have to decide to focus on becoming the next version of yourself. Someone who takes on anything new or challenging or difficult because it will make you stronger. Someone who knows that they can create new thoughts. Someone who knows that all the possibilities of their life currently exist in this moment. And if you are willing to go through the process of change, you can proceed with your life from your future possibility.

Change is hard on purpose, but do it anyway.
