Paralysis Ticks and Snakes!

Over the past month or so we have seen a number of patients for emergency treatment following a snake bite or collapsing from a paralysis tick. Whilst snake bites are something we can't prevent against, tick paralysis is something we can.

There is a number of simple-to-use products on the market. They vary in how long the prevention coverage lasts. The time periods are from one to six months and either come as a chew or spot-on. We recommend our clients Nexgard Spectra or a product from the Bravecto range.

In the photo above Practice Manager, Chris is holding the antivenoms that are used to save a pet's life. Whilst they are small and don't seem like a lot they are powerful and are all we have to prevent a pet from passing away if they are bitten by a snake or paralysis tick. It is also a rather costly procedure and to make matters more concerning there is a shortage of tick antivenom (the yellow box). So, if your pet isn't currently up-to-date with tick prevention please make this a priority.

To help our client make tick prevention last longer we have a... Nexgard Spectra Christmas promotion!

With the warmer weather upon us and a national shortage of paralysis tick anti-serum, it's never been a better time to stock up on parasite preventatives for your pet.

How to check your dog for ticks

In this video, the team from Animal Emergency Service (AES) show us how to search our dogs for ticks. The same principle can be followed for cats.

Ticks

With the warm weather starting to kick in, it's the perfect time for ticks to become more present in your pet's environment. Ticks are a type of arachnid (like spiders, scorpions, and mites) that are also parasitic. Depending on their life cycle and feeding stage, they can vary in size.

Snakebite Prevention

During the warmer days of Spring, snakes become more active as they leave their winter retreats in search of a mate and food. There are 27 species of snake found in the Brisbane area, the most common being the coastal taipan, tiger snake, death adder, rough-scaled snake and eastern brown snake.
