HCOP Summer in Full Swing Welcome to the 2022 Online Structured Summer Session! The HCOP team along with our devoted instructors, facilitators, presenters, and community partners have been creating a new community of health professionals this past 5 weeks, and our session is set to conclude on August 5th, 2022. Throughout the past 5 weeks, we have engaged in some awesome enrichment courses as well as informative and immersive virtual experiences during our Friday Fun Day activities, as you will see below. As the summer session draws to a close, we wish our HCOP participants (past and present) a happy and healthy summer and hope they are going into the next school year feeling refreshed and prepared. #TeamHCOP |

2022 Online Structured Summer Session – Student Orientation HCOP is closing out Year 4 with yet another virtual session filled with future health professionals! We’ve jumped into a new season of academic and professional groundwork with fifty (50) remarkable high school and undergraduate students who each have made the commitment to continue to prepare themselves for success during the summer. To be a part of the HCOP Structured Summer Program, each student commits to a program schedule consisting of Monday – Thursday (10:00 A.M. CST – 3:40 P.M. CDT) and Friday (11:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M. CDT) for the entire six-week session. |

2022 Online Structured Summer Session Programmatic Activities While the keystone of the HCOP Structured Summer Program is the enrichment classes that occur Monday through Thursday, students take a break from their books each Friday to take part in activities that serve to further build a strong foundation for their future careers. While the COVID-19 pandemic has moved HCOP to a virtual space, the enrichment experiences continue! |

Dr. William Austin, Ed.D., M.A.E. This is Dr. Austin's fourth summer of teaching for the HCOP Structured Summer program. Dr. Austin is an associate professor in the Teacher Education Program at the University of Nebraska - Omaha with an interest in multicultural inclusion and diversity awareness. For HCOP, he teaches Psychology Enrichment. |

Dr. Brenda Grewe, PhD After over 20 years of teaching Biology at the college level, Dr. Brenda Grewe recently retired from her most recent position as an associate professor of instruction in the Biology department at the University of Iowa. For HCOP, Dr. Grewe teaches the Genetics Enrichment course. This is Dr. Grewe's third summer of teaching for HCOP. |

Dr. Joshua Jamison, PhD Dr. Jamison earned his Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Pathology in 2014. After working in a laboratory setting, Dr. Jamison became an instructor of Biology for the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff before pursuing his passion for web-based learning. He has recently returned to the classroom as a science teacher as well. He is currently teaching Cell Biology for the HCOP Summer program. This is Dr. Jamison's third summer of teaching for HCOP. |

Ashutosh Kumar, MS Mr. Kumar is currently an instructor at Central High School in Omaha, NE, teaching Physics at the Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and regular levels. He is also an IB examiner and tutor of students in Physics. For the HCOP summer program, he teaches High School and Undergraduate Physics. This is Mr. Kumar's third summer of teaching for HCOP. |

Amanda Marcuccio, MS, M.Ed., MA Ms. Marcuccio has been an English teacher for various Omaha high schools since 2006. Besides teaching English (including AP and Honors-level coursework), she also has taught as an adjunct professor at the post-secondary level. Ms. Marcuccio is currently teaching Academic Reading and Writing for the HCOP Summer program. This is Ms. Marcuccio's third summer of teaching for HCOP. |

Dr. Babatunde Ojo, PhD A tenured professor of Chemistry and Biology at Dine College in Arizona, Dr. Ojo has his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry, and has an extensive background in both instruction and research, including pharmaceutical research and development. For the HCOP program, Dr. Ojo teaches Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry. This is Dr. Ojo's third summer of teaching for HCOP. |

Tyler Payne, M.S. Mr. Payne is currently the Dual Enrollment Navigator, Secondary Partnerships at one of HCOP’s community partners, Metropolitan Community College. He has an extensive background of working with students both at MCC and during his time with the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Division of Student Success. For the HCOP Summer program, Mr. Payne teaches Strategies for Academic Success. This is Mr. Payne's third summer of teaching for HCOP. |

Dr. Tatyana Pinyayev, PhD (No picture available) Dr. Pinyayev is an experienced research chemist with a passion for teaching at both the high school and undergraduate levels. With her BS in Chemistry and her PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Dr. Pinyayev provides students the opportunity to see Chemistry in a new way and to garner excitement for the subject. During the school year she is department chair and teacher of Honors and AP Chemistry at Covington Latin School in Kentucky. |

Dr. Robert Selkin, MD Dr. Selkin began his career as a private practice ophthalmologist. However, his passion turned to education in 2014 when he began coaching underprivileged students in LaCrosse and helping ensure their pathway to college. He now heads a test prep/college prep program and his work with youth is detailed in the ESPN documentary Crossroads. He is the ACT Prep instructor for the HCOP 2022 Summer program. This is Dr. Selkin's third summer of teaching for HCOP. |

Isabel Botello, MBA (No picture available) With extensive background in both clinical and clinical education settings, Ms. Botello is an instructor and program leader in an extensive range of subjects related to medical assisting and clinical care at the college level. For HCOP, Ms. Botello teachers Medical Terminology and Gross Anatomy Enrichment. This is her first summer teaching with HCOP. |

Christina Jelinek, BS After getting her degree in Education, Mrs. Jelinek spent 6 years teaching in a public school setting. In her time in public education, Mrs. Jelinek discovered her passion for student counseling and academic success. After her move to Omaha, Mrs. Jelinek came aboard HCOP as the Academic Success Counselor/Case Manager, where she has focused on helping students set goals and have the tools to accomplish them. During the HCOP summer program, Mrs. Jelinek teaches Tools for Academic Success. |

Summer Andrews, MA Summer is an innovative and engaging math teacher from Southern California. With a BS in Psychology and a minor in Math, she discovered her love of teaching and pursued a master’s in mathematics with a concentration in teaching. With a wealth of experience in teaching both in-person and via online learning, Summer is a faculty member for The Art of Problem Solving Initiative, whose mission is to increase representation in the STEM field for underserved students. For the HCOP summer program, Ms. Andrews teaches Algebra and Trigonometry Enrichment. This is her first summer with HCOP. |

Lesenya Braziel Wichita Heights HIgh School – Wichita, Kansas Rising Junior High School Structured Summer Program Participant Question 1: What health professional career are you pursuing and why? Answer: “I would like to pursue a career in neuroscience and cancer biology because I want to help continue research behind common sicknesses, and I also like the blend between medicine and science. I enjoy learning about how the human body and mind are extremely co-dependent on the brain." Question 2: What is your biggest accomplishment? Answer: "My biggest accomplishment has been the way that I have been able to become less shy and more outspoken. Growing up I was really shy when it came to speaking up for myself and I always seemed to think less of myself, but recently I have been able to step outside of my comfort zone and create a voice for myself.” Question 3: What do you enjoy during your free time? Name one interesting thing about you. Answer: "When I have free time, I enjoy reading books of all genres – two of my favorite books are "We Were Liars” by E. Lockhart and "Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself” by Dr. Joe Dispenza.” |
