ROAR sponsored it's first event with Voices: Undivided lead by student activist Faith Blackstone. The night was kicked off by a video produced by Faith which can be watched here. The room was packed and the performances/readings by students, ROAR leader Tonya Blackstone-Coleman, T. Mychael Rambo, Niles and Se'Anna left everyone energized and proud to be among Black GREATNESS! ACTION STEP! The Increase Teachers of Color Act was just introduced in the House by Rep. Mary Kunesh-Podein. We need YOU to contact your local legislators and urge them to support this act. Studies have proven representation matters in the classroom and is essential for the well being and success of Black and Brown students. Lack of teachers of color is a problem in ECCS (98.9% white teachers vs 22% minority student population) but also a state and nationwide issue. This Act would provide grants and funding for recruiting, maintaining, and training teachers of color. See this article for more info and this contact list for local and state representatives. |
