Welcome We are up to issue #24 having started in June 2021 (missing December as nothing much is on) The improvements this month, is we should load a lot faster! I'm still working out how to do the exhibition section so it is easier to read and to get to see great shows. June was peak contest time but we have listed four that are have not closed yet which are awesome. Also the W Eugene Smith and Arnold Newman Grants will open soon. It is near the end of the Pixy Lau and Sheet film exhibitions, if you have not seen them, do yourself a favour! Our goal is to reach as many people as we can and bring the photo community in Victoria together to know and experience all that we have. Each month our long term content moves to reframe-refocus.xyz for look, buy/fix, hire, labs and previous newsletters so that you can view a full list of what is here. If you write photography criticism and live are around Melbourne, we would love to hear from you about building a career in Victoria. Also we are on the lookout for talented photographers/artists to promote through the newsletter, gallery and by word of mouth. |

Library at The Dock - Docklands Link Map Be Longing Parminder Kaur Bhandal 14 June to 9 July 2023 The trees can stand for decades, decaying quietly, and slowly, while leaching a gradual and steady release of nutrients back into the forestry understory. Housing ecological islands of otherness. This idea of a dead thing sustaining life has become a metaphor within the work itself. It is an ode to the things that are no longer with us but still exist as a continuous source of strength and comfort. How people, places, and experiences from the past inform who we are and what we become. Songs Festival Cybele Malinowski, Wendy McDougall, Greg Noakes, Gary Ede and more. 14 June to 9 July 2023 Craig Kamber, Songs Festival Executive Director, said, "We are thrilled to be able to offer audiences this unique opportunity and new perspective to delve into the art and craft of songwriting. The exhibition will appeal to a cross-generational audience, with something for everyone to enjoy." Original photographs that have appeared on influential album releases from Sonic Youth, The Smiths, The B52s and more will also be featured. Surface Tension John Inns 12 July to 6 August 2023 Conventional boundaries of photographic practice are challenged by inviting the water within the river to collaborate in the image-making process. Photographic negatives are submerged into water collected from the site where they were exposed. The river reworks the negatives in unpredictable ways, creating new photographs that are corrupted and transformed by the water. The original memory of the place is erased and replaced by a photographic amnesia. The resulting images are faded and abstracted, defying and challenging recognition. |

Museum of Australian Photography - Monash Link Map formally Monash Gallery of Art ZAHALKAWORLD – an artist’s archive Anne Zahalka 10 June to 10 September 2023 Anne Zahalka is one of Australia’s most highly regarded photo-media artists who has exhibited extensively in Australia and overseas for over 40 years. Her work explores cultural and environmental points of tension, interrogating them with humour and a critical perspective. Her practice is centred around deconstructing familiar scenes and re-presenting them to allow for alternative narratives that reflect, amongst other things, on cultural diversity within Australian society and the ecological impact of the global climate crisis. Heidi - Bulleen Link Map Binding Ties Catherine Opie to 9 July 2023 Since the 1990s Catherine Opie’s photographs have challenged and illuminated our understanding of notions of personal and political affiliation. Opie has in this time firmly established an international reputation as one of the leading photographers of her generation. This is the first survey of the artist’s work in Australia. While Opie remains best known for her portraits of leather dykes, drag performers and transgender members of her queer community in San Francisco and Los Angeles in the nineties, the world around these works has shifted seismically. Today, they may be read in light of contemporary understandings of gender and sexuality as more fluid, the limits of community and kinship as increasingly porous and concepts of citizenship progressively more inclusive and accountable. The exhibition at Heide traverses Opie’s early, most recognisable works exploring constructions of gender and sexuality, through alternative conceptions of the nuclear household, to more recent musings on solidarity and collective action in the face of proliferating global crises. |

Gold Street Gallery - Trentham East Link Map THE END OF THE BEGINNING Craig Tuffin to 9 July 2023 We often spend much of our time remembering. It’s easy to experience feelings of nostalgia when looking at old photographs. Even vernacular photographs without authorship, with their bent corners, anonymous handwriting and stains from poor processing and mishandling, can elicit those same emotions. All photographs are in a cycle of surreal transformation, where the present immediately becomes the past, and the past evidence of an inevitable future. The Briny Deep Exhibition runs Bianca Conwell 9 August to 1 October 2023 An observation of the recurring shapes and forms in nature. Throughout the natural world we find repeating shapes; meandering patterns, symmetries, spirals and waves. We see the shapes of grand landscapes and mountain ranges, flowing bodies of water, plant and animal life, prehistoric forms, celestial bodies and galaxies all reflected in each other. This is my first solo exhibition, all of the photographs in it are made using large format cameras, hand made emulsions and negatives, and hand made printing methods. This exhibition includes salt and carbon prints from wet plate glass negatives, and ambrotypes. I am inspired by time spent in nature along the Otway coast in Victoria, and in this work especially by objects from the sea. |
