At Nova Luxe, we recognize the importance of detailing the speed and range post electric re-fit. Estimates provided by Torqeedo engineers have proven reliable. However, we realize that looking beyond the equipment manufacturer for a third-party analysis would provide a trustworthy and well-rounded understanding of performance expectations surrounding the conversion to electric yachts. With that in mind, Nova Luxe commissioned Datawave Marine Solutions (DMS) to perform this detailed analysis.
DMS was selected based upon their credentials as well as an extensive review of their body of public reports. This company demonstrates in-depth technical knowledge as well as sound problem solving skills on a variety of aquatic principals such as hydrodynamics. In discussions with the founder, it was clear that the report would be thorough and backed by independent statistical examination. Unlike Torqeedo’s method which contrasts electrical power against the fuel burn of diesel engines, DMS calculated the resistance of the vessel and the necessary electrical power to overcome that resistance. Differences in the approach of the problem provide a better understanding of speed and range of estimates post re-fit.
Our request to DMS was straightforward and the information provided by Nova Luxe was limited, for the purpose of not influencing the results. We wanted an independent calculation of the speed and range for two hybrid models if used on a Leopard 51 PC. The components and weight for each configuration was provided to DMS. All other information, such as Leopard 51 hull resistance curves, were in the hands of DMS to research and validate directly with Leopard in the interest of creating an independent and reliable analysis.
Hybrid configuration 1 includes a diesel engine in one hull and electric engine in the other. This has a total of 450 horsepower and a top speed over 17 knots. Configuration 2 has two electrical motors as well as one diesel generator for range extension. Config 2 has a top speed of 12 knots and a speed at unlimited range of 6.6 knots*. Under both scenarios, you always have power when you need it. Unlimited range and a top speed that excites – that is Nova Luxe. See the Technical Briefing Report for the full analysis.
