From the Director:
If you're like me, you are probably very annoyed by the inconvenient arrival of Hurricane Dorian. Her name was written nowhere in my September calendar (which is very full already). My kids were just getting into the "school routine" and my 2 year old was about to start preschool this week. I was looking forward to catching up on my to do list. Now, we have lots of questions:
Where will the hurricane go? How long will we be out of school? Do we have enough supplies? Should we evacuate or stay? What if we lose power? What if a tree lands on the house?
... and I know I'm not the only one with these thoughts.
I encourage you to think, for a moment, about how frustrating, and sometimes scary, it is to have your plans ruined by something so completely out of your control. These "hurricane issues" are a teeny tiny taste of what those we serve experience when they are suddenly thrown into the unpredictable and scary world of cancer when they are "too young" to be sick. One major difference- they are usually the only ones in their friend group experiencing it. What if a hurricane was coming ONLY at you? What if your routine was disrupted, but no one else's? What if you were made to buy extra supplies and prepare for a disaster, and everyone around you continued life as usual, untouched by the storm? How frightening and lonely that would be...as is young adult cancer.
Your support helps us make these "cancer storms" more like team events, rather than lonely personal battles. I pray for all of your safety during the coming days, and ask that you take some time to lift up our "Boonies" who are juggling cancer treatments AND a hurricane this week.
Thank you for your continued support!
