All ACWA Members Annual Meeting

Tuesday December 12, 2023

At The New AIH Shop

2716 Commercial Dr. Anchorage

6:00 PM

We will have a (ALL MEMBERS) meeting Tuesday 12-12-23 at 6:00 pm at the new AIH shop. The purpose of the meeting is to approve new By Laws changes that have been approved by the ACWA Executive Board. The Changes relate to the election of officers for the individual clubs, and the Executive Board.

To summarize, each club will elect a President, Vice President, and Recording Secretary. Each club will also nominate 3 members to the ACWA Executive Board. The nominees to The Executive Board will elect a President, Vice President, Recording Secretary and Treasurer. The duties of the club officers and the Executive Board have not changed and are spelled out in the By Laws. The Executive Board made these changes to ensure equal representation of all the clubs on the executive board, and to eliminate the need to have multiple elections for each club and the executive board.

The current Bylaws require that any changes to the bylaws must be approved by a majority of the members present at the annual meeting.

Please plan on attending and see our new shop, it is pretty special. If you get there before the store closes at 6:00 pm you can walk through the store back to the shop. If you arrive after 6:00 you will need to walk around to the back of the building, and enter through our (After Hours Entrance).

December Monthly Meeting:

The typical Woodworkers Monthly Meeting will be replaced for December with the AWCA Annual Meeting. The Woodworkers monthly meeting format will return on January 9 at 7 p.m. The Annual Meeting is for all ACWA members that are part of the 3 chapters (woodworkers, carvers and scrollers). The meeting will be held on December 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the workshop at the Alaska Industrial Hardware (AIH) store located at 2716 Commercial Drive. Please enter through the store front door and walk back to the shop.

Among the topics will be a discussion of proposed changes to the governing by-laws followed by a vote to approve them plus planning and preparation for the 2024 Artistry in Wood showcase event. And you will be able to tour the new workshop!

November Monthly Meeting Recap:

The Woodworkers Chapter meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month from September to May. Jim Crum was our speaker on November 14.

Jim Crum, a long-time AWCA member and talented woodworker, gave a presentation on chainsaw carving. Jim discussed the tools he uses and brought a few along such as an electric chainsaw and die cutters. Jim described and showed the carving process on his bear and frog animal sculptures and carvings of doors. As part of his presentation, he carved an owl prior to the meeting and brought it with him. Jim explained how it was carved, power sanded, singed, and stained to establish shades and colors, and then completed with acrylic boat paint finish and the eyes glued in place. Very impressive and a wonderful presentation. Thanks Jim!

Open Shop Program: Woodworking Saturday Moves to Every Wednesday:

The Open Shop Program resumed on Saturday, December 2. However, the format will change to every Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. beginning in January. Our volunteer shop monitors are excited about the new schedule which increases the opportunities for members to have access to the workshop and the shop monitors will be there to help folks with projects as needed.

Please Note: If you want to use the shop, you need to sign up on the website as we can only have a maximum of 4 students in the shop on each date (https://www.alaskacreativewoodworkersassociation.org/book-online). You will need to indicate what you are planning to build, what kind of help you need and the time you will be there.[AP1]

[AP1]Tam: The website sign up for Open Shop Program will need to be updated to reflect this change from Saturday to every Wednesday.

Also related: Please add the instruction to the registration page that students need to write in the comment box what they are planning to build, what kind of help they need and the time they will be there

Fall Classes:

Most of our classes are led by experienced woodworker AWCA members for the benefit of all our members to learn, build and get to know fellow members. A big thanks to those instructors for all the hours they put in preparing for and teaching these classes! There is a lot that goes into each class offering.

The Class schedule details are wrapping up and there will be new offerings posted to our website for you to check out and register for. These winter classes begin in January and include a blanket chest, bookcase with glass doors, side table, hall table, and wall shelf. We will also have a weekday series of beginner classes. I suggest you sign up quickly when they are posted in December so you don’t miss out since these classes can fill quickly.

Meet a Member Feature: Cat Hefley

I thought you might have an interest hearing this month from the perspective of a new member Cat Hefley. Cat recently discovered the ACWA and is enthusiastically exploring the types of woodworking disciplines and traditions that our chapter encompasses through classes, meeting presentations, and open shop.

From Cat:

I am an emergency veterinarian and came to Alaska from North Carolina about 13 years ago. While I primarily do emergency medicine, I also do a lot of surgery. I have always liked building things or doing projects where you can see the results of your work at the end of the day. For several years I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, even going to Honduras to help build a couple houses. In veterinary school, I learned how to put together skeletons into models. In doing so, I was introduced to basic woodworking in making the stands for the models.

While I have always been interested in woodworking, I never really knew how to get started in it. I've had friends who were carpenters or cabinet makers who would show me how to use certain tools or do simple projects. I never really had an opportunity to get more experience in the methods of woodworking. Earlier this year I came across a flyer in the Habitat for Humanity Restore for the woodworking club advertising classes. I signed up right away and have attended every class I could since. Everyone I've met in the club so far has been great. Always ready to share tips and experiences. I have learned a lot in a short amount of time and look forward to continuing learning for years to come.
