In less then two weeks we will have an amazing art exhibition celebrating art and The Kootenays in our (solo) art exhibition space. The deadline for this open art exhibition has passed and the first adjudication round finished yesterday. Adjudicators Barbara Maye, Grant Smith, and myself selected the artworks that will go on display in the art gallery. It is going to be a really good show! The selected artworks will have a chance to be shortlisted for the Kootenay (Ktunaxa*) Art Prize 2023. The adjudication for the shortlist will take place on January 31st. The winner will be determined by draw from the shortlist during the opening reception (date TBD). The art exhibition will start on February 1st and the artworks will be on display and for sale in the gallery and on the website until February 25th. For all non-shortlisted artworks, there is the Inspiration Award for which the winner will be determined by draw during the opening reception as well. All artworks entered will be available on our website from February 1-25, BUT especially for you, our loyal followers, here is a sneak peek of all the artworks that were entered into the open art exhibition. You are the first to see them, enjoy! *We acknowledge that Kimberley (k̓ukamaʔnam, pronounced: ‘koo-ka-mah-nam’) is within Ktunaxa ?amak?is (pronounced: ‘k-too-nah-ha a-mah-kis), commonly referred to as Ktunaxa Territory, the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation. The word "Ktunaxa" in the title of this exhibition is used as the translation of the word "Kootenay" (or Kutenai) as found on the First Voices website: https://www.firstvoices.com/explore/FV/Workspaces/Data/Ktunaxa/Ktunaxa/Ktunaxa/learn. As aboriginal languages are a fundamental and valued element of Canadian culture and society, we are making an effort to learn more about and be more aware of the Ktunaxa language. In the future, we hope to also be able to include some Ktunaxa words in the signage in our art gallery as well as on our website. |

Solo art exhibition by Laura Leeder coming up in March. Mixed media collage artist, floral gardener, bird enthusiast, and sunseeker Laura has been putting together a collection of paintings full of texture and joy since we made the plans for this exhibition about a year ago. Laura plants seeds of beauty and happiness into every painting she creates out of The Garden Studio in Creston. No better time for an exhibition of Laura's joyful, intricate collage paintings then March when we all need some freshly picked, lighthearted, and expressive artwork that celebrates nature, lifts our spirits, and beautifies our homes! Get a little taste of what's to come by checking out Laura's artworks currently at the art gallery. |
