The Scoop

The latest from The Replenishery

Hey Hey,

Welcome to the September edition of 'The Scoop' from

The Replenishery.

We are very happy that things seem to have got back to a bit more normality. The new normal of wearing face masks and keeping social distancing means that lots of people can get out and about and come to visit us in our little shop, have a chat and replenish all their jars and containers.

Thanks to everyone who popped in to see us to top up your plastic free goods in August. You kept us busy, especially with refilling household and personal care liquids. We love it when you bring your own bottles and containers, because every time you bring in your empty bottle to refill you are saving making of a new one.

It's back to school for lots of people. It brings back a lot of good memories - Ian remembers having an amazing Pac-Man lunchbox and flask and Oli had a lovely fabric pouch made by her mum to hold her sandwich (rohlik) and an apple. Nowadays we would definitely recommend something like Oli had, we have lots of  beeswax wraps, reusable baggies and lunch tins to look cool in the dinner hall.

Competition Time

We had a lot of entries for the August competition to win a big tin of Two Farmers crisps. We did the draw on Saturday and the winner was Maria. She hasn't picked them up yet, but you know we will post a lovely picture of her (and the crisps) when she does. Keep an eye on Facebook, Insta and Twitter.

This months competition is for an lovely Lunch Pack (either Beeswax or Soy) made by Bee Sweet & Bumble.

Both the beeswax and vegan wax food wraps are nature’s alternatives to single use plastic. The beeswax wraps are made using 100% biodegradable cotton, locally sourced Cheshire beeswax, natural pine resin and organic jojoba oil, and the vegan wax wraps are made from 100% biodegradable cotton, non-GMO Soy wax, natural pine resin and organic jojoba oil. This means they’re cruelty-free and completely vegan.

Beeswax and pine resin both contain naturally occurring anti-bacterial properties which make them perfect for keeping food fresher for longer. Use your wraps in the fridge for wrapping fruit and vegetables, cheeses, pastries, covering food bowls etc, or use them in lunch boxes to wrap sandwiches, cake, snacks and treats. The wraps can be folded to create pouches, or simply used as wrappers to keep your food super-fresh.

If you aren't lucky enough to win, we have plenty in stock in The Replenishery.

To enter - It's the same as last month :) simply come and visit us in The Replenishery and make a purchase. We'll put your name into a jar, the more you visit, the more entries you get!

We will pick out a winner at random close of play on Wednesday 30th September.

In the News

There have been lots of interesting TV shows on recently that have been highlighting some of the issues around plastic, pollution and waste.

Last night saw the first episode of the new series of War on Plastic on BBC1. There were some worrying facts about recycling labelling and that fact that just because something says it can be recycled, it doesn't mean it will be. Plastic in teabags, we'd heard about it, but seeing it was very scary. They also talked about the concerns that a family had about going plastic free and the higher amount they thought they would pay out each week. Thankfully this was quashed and they ended up spending less money and having less plastic. Some of the tips they had were great:

  • Bring your old containers to a refill shop and get them filled up and keep using them until you can't use them any more.

  • Take your own bags/containers when going shopping, don't be afraid to ask the butcher, fishmonger, kebab shop or market stall to put their product in your container.

  • If what you want isn't available plastic free, get something else. If you wanted apples and they are all in plastic, get some pears that aren't instead.

We also watched the Secret World of Your Rubbish on Channel 5, it had some powerful pictures and gave some great stats. The one that stuck in our heads was how every single piece of glass that is out there can be recycled and recycling uses less energy. Of course it is even better to reuse glass as much as you can.

Always think can you Reduce your need for something? Reuse or Upcycle it? or as the last resort Recycle?

Wigan & Leigh Climate Action Survey

Wigan and Leigh Climate action is a group that highlights some of the issues in the area.

They have put together a survey to find out what people in our Wigan borough think about climate change and pollution and how we can help to combat it. It's a local group, associated to Friends of the Earth, who think that many little changes done by many individual people, can improve the way we currently treat the earth. Please take 5 minutes to tell us what you think so we can target specific local issues to help us all make a difference. The  data will be used for statistical purposes only and any input is really appreciated.

If you want to be kept informed or volunteer for the many ways you could help our planet then please do join the facebook group 'Wigan and Leigh Climate Action'. The link is here
