Newsletter October 31, 2022 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

In honor of Halloween, a teaching about scary things in Judaism: we learn about the prevalence of demons in this world from the Talmud, Tractate Berachot 6a. There, over 1,500 years ago, Rav Huna taught that each and every person has 1,000 demons to the left and 1,000 demons to the right.

That means that the rabbis knew that the world is a tough place. A scary place. They were keenly aware of the challenges of this world. That we are, each day, walking a gauntlet, surrounded by danger everywhere. That’s normal. It’s not that life is meant to be easy but we are cursed by God. It’s the other way around for the rabbis. To the rabbis, life is normatively hard, scary, and even dangerous, but it is God’s love that keeps us in the game. It is, in fact, Psalm 91 where we learn that God’s grace protects us.

And so goes the logic- if we were not graced with God’s love, we surely would be consumed by these unsavory elements. So that means that each of us is the beneficiary of Divine love. And we are made to be champions, triumphing every day over at least 2,000 demons and their wily ways.

Every day, our experience is a beacon of light and love and blessing that serves as a stark contrast to the negativity that is normative in the world around us. Together, we are shining our love and light. As we spread good cheer by handing out Halloween candy, may we be reminded of the blessing we are called to be in the world.

Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

MAZAL TOV, ZACK & MELISSA!

The entire Keeping It Sacred community wishes a hearty Mazal Tov to Melissa and Zack who wed yesterday in an intimate and joyful ceremony officiated by Rabbi Miller in Chino Hills, CA. The couple, from Michigan, married in CA to enjoy attendance by the groom's beloved Bubbie who turned 100 years old this past Rosh Hashanah-- and served as their flower girl. This week's Torah portion is Lech Lecha (where Abram and Sarai depart on their epic journey)-- may Melissa and Zack continue to be blessed and be a blessing as they go forth on their adventure together!

KITS STANDS FOR REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS

Rabbi Miller and the Keeping It Sacred community joined with 23 other faith based communities in support of an opinion piece in favor of reproductive rights and a separation of church and state written by Keeping It Sacred friend, Dr. Rev. Sarah Halverson (click HERE for earlier interview between her and Rabbi Miller). The LA Times picked up on the story HERE.

THE POETIC VOICES OF THE HOLOCAUST

Through the Poetic Voices of the Holocaust, poet Ronni Rose will breathe life in the dramatic readings of those who perished and those surviving the Holocaust. Out of the darkness of inhumanity, they found words for an experience devoid of humanity and created in their poetic images humanity. The poetry of the children of the Terezin concentration camp preserved in the book I Never Saw Another Butterfly and the poems in the definitive Holocaust Anthology Art From The Ashes, of Nelly Sachs, Abraham Sutzkever, Paul Celon and Miklos Radnoti will be dramatically read with background and analysis presented.

Ronni Rose is a poet who has given professional poetry readings throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Colorado. She developed and taught a poetry course for children, The Poetic Expression Through Nature, Sensory Experience, Music and Art and has presented The Poetic Voices of the Holocaust in synagogues and an event space in Central New Jersey. She directs an Adult Education Film Series for Temple B’nai Shalom where she has presented programs for years as Adult Education Chair. She has been a jazz director for over a decade of major venues in New Jersey presenting the leading performing and recording jazz musicians of Europe, Asia, the United States and Brazil. Ronni Rose is a progressive activist, spiritual and celebrates life through nature. Please save the date for November 9 at 10am PT/1pm ET.

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

THIS THURSDAY AND EVERY THURSDAY! Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Currently, we are 100 members strong from 34 different states and 11 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
