Crispie Edges

03/11/22 Issue no. 9

Welcome to Crispie Edges, a newsletter with tidbits on my art practice, rec's worth checking out, and a recipe. Bit of a rebrand this edition from 'ie post' to 'Crispie Edges', feels more me.  Thank you for subscribing!

Print sale for Ukraine

As ‘ie bakes’ (for those who remember) has taken an indefinite pause I am offering something in place of a bake sale.  The print pictured here is for sale at 125.00. To purchase fill out this form.

70% of the proceeds will go to the World Central Kitchen, who provide food for refugees and those staying in Ukraine.

I chose this print because it is of my favorite baked good, bread. This drawing is of a ½ slice of bread I had made with my own starter. I have recently reflected on how I came to be a bread baker and what it has given to me in return. Read more here.

ie explains a painting

I can’t help myself on keeping things miniature. As I have increased the size of my paintings, I am still seeking out places to put small nuggets of information, for example donuts and glasses of juice in this painting. My love for Where’s Waldo didn’t wear off with age, I’m still enamored with finding things in pockets, nooks, and crannies. And you bet I’m a fan of English muffins.

The story behind this painting is on a recent Instagram post.

Professional bits and bobs

Things feel back in full swing. I had my first live studio visit in lord knows how long last month. I am feeling deep in the process of painting right now, which means I have no idea if what I am doing has value, but I also know this is not a time for questioning.

Recently, I contributed a piece for the Visual Artist Ireland news sheet. The entire newsletter is for members only, but you can read my piece ‘What Makes Me a Painter’ here.

In late April I will have three pieces in a group show at the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny. This show is described as a slice of what is happening in painting around Ireland now. The opening is on the 23rd of April and if you are in that area let me know, I am going to the opening.

listen, Read, Watch

For fun I have put together a Crispie Edges playlist, a sampler of some recent favorites. Fair warning, this mix has a wide range from things that get me through cold showers (acid raindrops) to background music for painting (Jóhann Jóhannsson). My favorite function on spotify is to make a radio station based on a song I like, perhaps you can apply this theory to something you like on this list. I added last month’s tune into the mix because it’s so great. And shout out to Connie for the Toms Diner cover.

I have been leaning into ‘mend don’t spend’ as my life motto and a friend recently recommended the book Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets and Philosophers By Leonard Koren. The idea of wabi-sabi is only understood by longer passages such as those offered in this book so if the idea of ‘mend don’t spend’ resonates I believe you too might find value in this book. (PS there is a sequel!)

Additionally in books department: Detransition Baby by Torrey Peters was incredible: funny, and informative. Asunder by Chole Aridjis is another book I am raving about which had artistic themes, a contemporary feel, and simultaneously held a sense of timelessness. And for the hat trick A Crooked Tree by Una Mannion is heartbreakingly good, I encourage anyone who has ties to both Ireland and America to check it out as there are many relatable passages to the cultural differences.

Lastly, something to watch that is visually indulgent and calming. I give you Peaceful Cuisines gorgeously shot video of a Gluten Free Banana Bread, ASMR lover or not its a treat.

In the kitchen

Simple Sprouts

Alfalfa sprouts are a favorite of mine, and I have come to enjoy the process of growing them in a glass jar on the windowsill weekly. Here are instructions on how to grow your own.

You will need:

Glass jar (pint sized is great)

Clean cloth to cover mouth of jar

Rubber band

1 Tablespoon Alfalfa Seeds

Instructions:

  • Clean the glass jar
  • Place one tablespoon of alfalfa seeds in the jar
  • Fill with water, cover and let sit overnight
  • In the morning cover the mouth of the jar with a piece of cloth, secure with a rubber band and drain the water.
  • Fill the jar with water again to rinse and drain again.
  • Prop the jar at a 45° (I just angle mine to sit on the edges of a coffee mug) and let sit in a bright and sunny place.
  • Rinse and drain once a day for about 4-5 days and you’ll have little pieces of crunchy nutritional green glitter.

Thank you for reading!

Let there be crunch in your cookie and ooze in your yolks
