to everything,

turn, turn, turn...

there is a season…

Who out there still hasn’t finished pulling the very last of summer’s vegetable plants? Raise your hands! I’m right there with you, still trying to hold on to that solitary, stoic tomato plant, and the warmer, longer days it represents.

But, as The Byrds sang (and actually, Pete Seeger penned):

To everything (turn, turn, turn)

There is a season (turn, turn, turn)

And a time to every purpose, under heaven

The words are so apt, as we say goodbye to summer and welcome fall, and as this pandemic painfully lingers on. Give it a listen here—it won’t disappoint, it may even soothe or better yet, inspire.

hear those byrds singing?

the gift that keeps on giving…

Back at the West Side Interfaith Pantry at Elim Lutheran last month, a young woman made a point of coming over to express her thanks for the array of starts we shared with her in the spring. She was kind enough to email us her words, so we could share them with you:

I want to express the level of gratitude I have for the vegetable starts I received through the getstarted program. I believe we acquired onions, summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers, lettuce, cilantro, & a few different varieties of tomato plants. All of which have grown abundantly in the couple garden beds we installed early summer. I can’t even begin to tell you how much fulfillment I receive each time I make a meal with the produce grown in our own backyard. I’ve indulged in endless tomatoes straight off the vine however most items end up in dishes that include as much fresh vegetables as possible. (Attached are) some of the dishes I’ve made with both ingredients acquired from food bank & the products from garden combined! One of my favorite things to eat is salsa & have had our fair share from what the garden has offered alone. Thank you & all involved so much for the ability to create & maintain something that brings me so much happiness, I deeply appreciate you all. :)

Thanks again, Starters.

rest, cover or grow, that is the question!

Whether you’re giving your vegetable garden (and you) a break, planting a cover crop to help the soil better prepare for spring plantings or continuing to grow more edible plants over the winter, good luck Starters & Growers!

No matter the season, consider continuing to support your local growing community, by shopping or volunteering at our program partner Petaluma Bounty, shopping at Petaluma Seedbank, purchasing Swallowtail Garden Seeds, and getting gardening supplies at Grab N’ Grow and Friedman’s.

And remember, UC Sonoma Master Gardeners are still there for you, available to answer your resting, covering and growing questions!
