Dear Seabird Parents,

It is unbelievable that another school year is almost over! Children leaving for TK/Kindergarten, please let Director Mei know of your last day (if you have not done that already). For all other families, as a reminder, a 60 day written notice is required for all withdrawals.

All our students automatically enroll into our summer camp with no tuition change. As summer approaches, just a reminder that Seabird’s policy does not allow prorating tuition for absences due to illness, vacation or personal matters. Seabird calculates tuition based on a 12 month enrollment period to ensure reasonable costs are passed on to parents as well as making sure we keep competitive salaries and benefits for our dedicated staff.

May curriculum

This month, activities are planned around Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day along with our theme of the month which is “Careers and Transportation”.

Happy Mother's Day to all Moms! Thank you for always being absolutely amazing!

In April Seabird students observed the metamorphosis of caterpillars turning into the butterflies. In May children will be releasing the butterflies and saying goodbye to them.

Parent/Teacher Conference

The school will be closed on Friday, May 7th for Parent/Teacher conferences which will be conducted through Zoom. If you have not received your zoom link, please reach out to Angela at billing@seabirdpreschool.com. All teachers look forward to sharing your child’s growth with you during the meeting.

Mandarin Immersion Class

Our new mandarin immersion class will start September 2021. Please check Seabird website, seabirdpreschool.com  for more details. If you or anyone you know is interested in our new mandarin immersion program, please reach out to Director Mei at director@seabirdpreschool.com to reserve your space.  At this time, spaces are limited to 12 children only, so don’t miss out if you want to sign up your child.

We are happy to announce that we have hired Ping Xue to lead the mandarin immersion program. She has over 20 years experience of teaching Mandarin to young children and is excited to have the opportunity to oversee our brand new program and lead it to success.

Updates from CCLD

After the most recent meeting with Community Care Licensing Division, the state licensing agency that oversees all licenced childcare facilities, they have asked all directors to pass along the following information to parents:

  1. Schools are no longer allowed to help sign in and out the children, so parents must remember to do that on their own. Please have your phone or passcode available when dropping off and picking up your child. There are QR codes posted at the drop off area as well as the gate entrance on Pelton. For those with nannies and would like them to use a different passcode, please submit a request with the person’s name and email to billing@seabirdpreschool.com and a separate code will be issued for them.

  1. Since CCLD is loosening restrictions on class sizes, all parents are to bring in a mask for their child, however we are still only required to try our best to encourage that to happen. On-site inspections will be resumed as of May and when the analyst comes to inspect the school, they need to see we are attempting to have all children wear the masks as much as possible, so please make sure there is a mask at school for your child, so we are not cited for any deficiencies.

Happy Birthday

Transitioning to a New School

Parents, just like you may feel nervous on your first day at a new school or job, your child may experience it too when starting a new school. Most children do not cry going to preschool and for those who do, it can last a few minutes, a few days and even weeks and sometimes this can be disconcerting to parents. Some of the factors which could affect a child’s reaction entering school are a child’s temperament, sleeping and eating patterns, routine, the environment and parents reaction and preparation. First and foremost, make sure your child is not ill or feeling discomfort. Please remember children are very sensitive to their parent’s behavior and reaction, so the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed they will be.

Prior to the first day, talk about the school, reiterate how much fun they will have and visit the school together so your child gets familiar with the environment and staff. On the first day, make sure your child is well rested and has eaten breakfast. Any disruption to a child’s normal routine may trigger a sad drop off (i.e. a parent is out of town, not the usual person does drop off, rushed morning routine, visitors at home, etc.), so try to have a consistent routine as much as possible. Once you arrive at the school, stay as long as you need, however, leave at some point so the staff can start bonding with your child. Once you say goodbye, don’t go in and out multiple times as that not only confuses your child, but also makes them more sad because they may interpret your behavior as leaving them multiple times. Do not ever sneak out because your child may think you vanished and will never come back and that is very startling to a child. Always say goodbye and that you will see them later even if they cry, then trust the staff to calm, distract and bond with your child.

The main thing to remember about transitions is that it is harder for parents than for the child.  Children are very resourceful and adapt quite well to new situations and once that initial fear or sadness dissipates, children will usually adjust well. Don’t be surprised that they start off wanting you to stay and later they don’t want you to pick them up.
