Parasite, 2019

Winner of last year’s Academy Award for Best Picture, Bong Jong-Ho’s Parasite is an exceptional masterpiece. The Kims, a poverty-stricken family, secretly infiltrate the wealthy Park family’s home after obtaining various jobs. After several unexpected circumstances, the Kims find themselves in a dilemma.

Perhaps the greatest part about Parasite is how it refuses to waste a scene. Filled with well-executed pacing, a brilliant script, and striking cinematography; there’s much to enjoy!

To those of you that are lucky enough to have already seen this filmーrewatch! There are far too many layers to catch the first time around, credit to Jong-Ho for disguising many of these subtle details throughout. I happened to enjoy this film much more the second time around!

Hilarious, suspenseful, witty, romantic, horrifying; Parasite has it all. Enjoy!

MY TAKEAWAY:

Shane Parrish’s podcast with Jim Dethmer provides excellent insight into how we can better understand and learn from our emotions! There are some great things to take away from this discussion, my favorites being: Dethmer’s tips on improving self-awareness (and why that matters), the maxim “stay above the line”, and shifting from a victim conscious to a more creative one (34:00 and 58:00).

MY TAKEAWAY:

After another week of quarantine, I figured it’d be best to share something relating to the current circumstance we’re all in. This article does a great job of breaking down why we may feel or react a certain way during this period, as I’m certain nearly none of us have undergone isolation to this extent. Additionally, the article reveals what we can learn from others who have undergone voluntary and involuntary isolation, the risks and rewards of solitude, and how we can overcome any of the challenging parts through this time.

I hope all of you are staying safe and making the most out of this time <3

ALBUM

God's Favorite Customer, Father John Misty

Following the 2017 release of the brilliant Pure Comedy, Father John Misty delivers with God’s Favorite Customer one year later. After scoffing at much of the world throughout his previous album, Tillman takes a turn for his fourth full-length LP. Clocking in at only 36 minutes in length (shortest to date), God’s Favorite Customer isn’t quite as dense as Pure Comedy. Rather, it manages to be more direct than its predecessors. Less focused on affection or love (I Love You, Honeybear) and social commentary (Pure Comedy), God’s Favorite Customer reveals Tillman’s dark ruminations. This begins with the opening ballad “Hangout at the Gallows”, which serves as a great undercurrent for what’s to come. The ensuing track “Mr. Tillman” is both a dark and comedic song told from the perspective of a concerned hotel concierge (Tillman worked on this album for 2 months in a hotel). Other high points include “Disappointing Diamonds Are the Rarest of Them All.” A bold critique of modern relationships and the facade many of us show to the world while wrapped up in them. Tillman recruits Weyes Blood for the title track, as he desperately calls out for help in a terribly dark time of need. Josh Tillman’s vulnerability and honest songwriting shine through, making God’s Favorite Customer introspection at its best.
