Fear Free Focus

Avoiding Charlie Brown’s Teacher when Training Snoopy

By Karen Becker, Ph.D, CPDT-KA, Fear FreeÂŽ Certified

“Wah – Wah -wah-wah-wah!” Charlie Brown’s teacher – and often we humans, say with our dogs.

Does Snoopy really understand every word spoken at your house? Probably not. What he does understand is routine. So, when you pick up your keys – you’re probably leaving. If you pick up your keys and my leash – we are going someplace together!

Dogs are associative learners, that is – they associate actions and sometimes words with what’s going to happen next. Keep in mind that routines are like habits, you do the same thing over and over, at the same time, in the same way.

In your Dogsmartz Unleashed Beginner Obedience class, you may have been introduced to the use of a clicker for training. To use the clicker, you must “charge it” which happens by clicking near the dog and immediately giving Snoopy a treat. We do this so Snoopy associates the sound of the clicker with something wonderful coming his way in the form of a treat. Hence, Snoopy associates the clicker sound with the reward; a habit is formed that serves the human and the dog for training purposes.

Not all trainers rely on a clicker, but we do rely on “positive marker words,” such as “yes,” “good girl,” and “thank you.” But, if we use too many different marker words – or over-use it (rather than just when the behavior is achieved), the marker is “poisoned” and begins to sound like Charlie Brown’s teacher. “Wah – Wah -wah-wah-wah!”

For example, the word “okay” isn’t a good marker word because we say it all the time. We may not even be “talking” to Snoopy and then he’d think he should be rewarded.

From Kobe's Trainer:

Kobe and his family are the perfect example of unconditional love and perseverance. Everyone knows the ups and downs of having a young dog. However, only some understand the struggles a dog with anxiety has.

You have good days and you have bad, but the love and bond you create is like that of no other. The love Kobe and his family have is admirable. Keep up the good work! - Heather C

From Kobe's Onwers:

Kobe has been with Dogsmartz for over a year.  He just turned 2 in February. He has anxiety issues and is reactive to noises that scare him and cats. Working with him one-on-one has been the best for him as we continue to work with his issues. He loves all people as long as they come to say hello and his favorite activity is play with his ball. He also masters any puzzles you give him and he is super smart! As crazy as he can get, he loves bed time and cuddles.

And he loves his girlfriends Heather C and Jenny ❤️

We're so happy to see Kobe handling his anxiety well and want to thank his owners for being so diligent!

Private Training Sessions

Privates can be done for specific behavior issues such as but not limited to fear, anxiety, aggression or if basic training (obedience/manners) is desired.  The initial private session is 90 minutes long.  Based upon the information provided to us on our behavior history form, we will prepare a preliminary plan. Upon arrival, we will first observe the situation, implement management changes and teach new skills sets.  After the visit, we will provide a typed Behavior Treatment Plan for you to keep and use as a blueprint to work from.

For any behavior issues, we will also send letter to your Veterinarian (if you approve) to advise them of our observations and our plan moving forward.  We will work closely with your veterinarian in cases that require this.  The plan will be adjusted accordingly based upon our observations and may be further adjusted as we discuss progress in the weeks ahead.  You will have access to us for the lifetime of your pet after your visit via phone, text or email for any questions and/or concerns.  We request you provide us updates weekly or however often is needed via phone, email or text.

If you attend a private session at our facility, we do require your dog to be vaccinated with the following: Rabies, Bordetella, Distemper and a negative fecal.
