Santiam Ski Lodge Restoration Update ☃️ |
The Santiam Ski Lodge (no, not Hoodoo) recently released a progress update on their restoration efforts over the last year. For background, the Santiam Ski Lodge was constructed in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to open winter recreational opportunities on public lands. The lodge was run by a council of representatives of outdoors groups from local cities, and the USFS maintained control over meals and lodging fees so that the lodge would remain accessible to lower income communities. By 1941, on its first year of opening, over 10,000 people came to ski and recreate enjoying illumination for night skiing, and cross-country ski trails. Although the location was ideal in terms of topography and accessibility, the lodge’s elevation was too low to ensure adequate snow conditions for skiing. Eventually the lodge became too costly to continue to operate amid unpredictable snowfall, and in 1958, a Presbyterian Church Council obtained a special use permit from the US Forest Service and the site became a year round youth camp. Through the late 1970’s and early 1980’s the Presbyterian Church Council continued to use and maintain the lodge, as well as a large organizational camp. As the Presbyterian youth camp grew, the site of the Santiam Pass Lodge became too small to accommodate the needs of the growing camp, and by 1987 the lodge was vacant. For the past 3 decades, the lodge has remained empty becoming vulnerable to vandalism, and natural elements such as snow, wind, and water. In 2020, Susan and Dwight Sheets were awarded a grant to restore the lodge and have been working at it ever since through the organization Friends of Santiam Pass Ski Lodge. |
They expect the restoration to take a few more years, and once finished, they will offer a historic lodging and dining experience just across the highway from Hoodoo. Imagine, in just a few years, maybe we’ll be promoting it as a lodging option for cyclists during the summer months! Their latest progress update is impressive: |

BikeRumor recently released a review on the SCOR 4060 LT, saying it is nimble, precise, and playful. “Our interest in the SCOR 4060 LT was piqued by the modern, seemingly well-balanced set of geometry figures and the low-slung silhouette, as well as the hype around its gravity-oriented playfulness. Though its travel numbers put it firmly in the enduro category, it is marketed as a “fun first” mountain bike, rather than something you’d race against the clock. We simply had to get a shot on this one.” Read more about what they had to say here, and come into the shop to check out this bike for yourself. |
